I went riding two weeks ago in central PA at a coal town named Trevorton, known for its immense coal hill right outside of town. We came up in the back side of the hill and I stayed at the top, out of trouble with the other two utility riders, and let the two younger sport riders try some short hill climbs.

While waiting for them, I looked across to the plateau of the next pile across from us, maybe 75 yards away and from my eye angle it was a flat path to get there. So I headed up a 15° grade at about 20 mph in AWD just in case. I looked to my left to make sure no one was running parallel to me and then straight ahead to make sure I was still headed towards the plateau.

The next thing I remember, I was lying against the right wall of a cut that ran perpendicular to my access trail. The quad had fallen into this and tossed me as it hit. My helmet cracked into my jaw and knocked me out for about 10+ seconds. I don't remember falling in, I don't remember the quad going out from under me, all I remember is looking down the cut only to see a kid on his dirt bike on the left side of the cut, where he had ditched it to avoid being hit by my quad on its way down.

The quad was completely destroyed, and pieces were scattered down the entire climb, and I really started to hurt by the time I got to the bottom. It began raining on us. Back home, my wife (who was at the beach and had to drive 3+ hours home to deal with me) took me into an emergency clinic. That was at 6:30 and we were there til 9:30. Off to the hospital ER, where we stayed until 4AM Saturday morning. Diagnosis - fractured rib, internal bruising.

Pic of my side/back:

This happened two weeks ago, and right now I am more depressed than anything, but I try and take it one day at a time and just plop down on the sofa and watch TV all day and night and pop all sorts of pills. After two weeks off, I have finally been cleared to return to work on Monday.

More pics after the ATV was dropped off @ the dealership:

Worst part is being taken out of the sport I love, by force, never to return. I don't want to risk it again and leave my wife and kids without a husband or father. Even so, it kills me to see an empty spot in the garage where it was parked and know that my riding days are over. Ohh, and that avatar over there ...
<----
... its gotta go ... its too depressing seeing it now.

Apologies to the tl;dr crowd. I needed to vent and keep in mind that I survived a crash that has claimed numerous lives on that very hill. Life is short, enjoy every second. Play hard, but be smart about it too.

i understand the reasons you want to get out of it i reallly do. but those are the risks of what you were doing sometime stuff like that. i would continue to do it you can let something like that beat you. you had all the proper safety equipment which is why you wernt hurt. keep doing it youll regret it if you stop

I don't understand what happened, as in, what caused the crash?

I 'think" he thought he was on a plateau and was looking far ahead unfortunately there was a valley right in front of him and the atv (and the OP) fell into it.

Correct. I still don't remember anything after looking to my left. Next thing I knew, I was lying face down in a pile of coal shale with a busted up knee. I rolled over and saw a kid on a dirt bike about 25' down the hill from me. When I tried to get up and go down the slope to check on the ATV, that's when the broken rib made its presence known.

Ouch! I've crashed a few times on dirt bikes and ATVs, but never that bad. I have had busted ribs, but that was from BMX racing.

Easy to say, but he has a family. I personally respect more his decision to stop now and not just keep at it.

Sucks, OP, but eventually you'll find another hobby, even if it takes a few years. And trust me, one day you'll read in the news about a guy on an ATV who died and left his family orphaned and you'll feel better that at least you will never be that guy.

Yep, already planning the next hobby. I wanted to get our family out of its 'beach' rut. Both my wife and I hate the beach but the kids love it so we do it for them. So I am going to take the insurance $$ from the ATV and the enclosed trailer sale (might as well sell that now too) and buy a nice travel camper, something like a 25'-29' camper.

We are ideally situated here in PA, with major camping sites in all directions, and less than 2 hours drive as well. I have already started buying more PC hardware as well. I had well over 10 PCs running 24/7 (crunching for DC) in the house a few years before I got into ATV riding, so I guess I will be dragged back into the hardware upgrade cycle here shortly. I already planned out an SB build even though I play no games that require that much PC to run.

i can respect the decision, but really there are other places with less risk to ride an AWD ATV. forest creeps, dunes as well as actual dirt tracks set up for challenge without hidden pitfalls. you only do it if you want to tho. people that want to find ways to still do it and not endanger their lives.

my boss slid off his atv going around a curve on a graded dirt road. hit the burm on the side and broke his arm, a couple ribs and repositioned his shoulder. lots of surgeries later he can now move his arm again. point is, it can happen anywhere, and you seem experienced enough to survive a lot more challenging areas than most casual riders

A friend of mine who was a year younger died in an ATV crash in 2003. Left behind a wife and 4 kids. Very nice guy, very friendly and all around good person. I got out of jetskiing for the same reason you are. Had a few wrecks (on the water, but they still hurt), and I thought to myself, if I got run over by a boat or hit too hard and got knocked out and drowned, would it be worth it? We now have a boat and do things together as a family.

Bommy, if you come up the back side of Coal Hill, you may be near the spot that I took my tumble. In fact, I'm sure some of my plastics and whatnot are still on that hill somewhere.

What bugs me as well was the fact the hill was closed due to the dust it created that floated into the town of Trevorton. I knew that, and was not planning on doing anything other than riding up the backside of the hill, getting a quick pic and getting off. It was not even posted as off limits to riders but I did my homework since it was our first visit to Trevorton.

I sunk a bit over 7k into the sport over the past 3 years, but I had been averaging $2250 a year on PC hardware, so it was pretty much a wash. I gave up PC upgrading and went whole hog into ATV riding. I met some great friends doing it, and hopefully I can hitch a ride on a spare quad maybe once or twice a year just to get out and enjoy the woods.

Those 'not as bad as they could have been' accidents are pretty nerve wracking, I'm glad that you're okay! I had a skiing accident where I woke up in the ambulance about an hour later once they get oxygen on me... makes you re-evaluate things for sure.

On a tangent: do you still have the helmet you were wearing? If you do, cut it in half and see how much of the foam got compressed during the impact and post pictures if you don't mind.
