Titan BIOS and Warranty

with 780 launch at $650. titan price has drop back to reality. light used has been closing regularly on ebay for 850-900 shipped. with this price break, titan sli has been a serious consideration.

a concern does put a pause on the aquisition going forward. history shows evga has an excellent warranty, however due to the throttling issue with titan, many titan's bios has been re-flashed to vbios for improved performance. this process voids the warranty.

what is nvidia/evga response to this? is there an official bios in the works?

Titan has built in "this guy flashed his vbios" algorithms. Once they know you did it, not only do they void your warranty but they send big brother after you and seize your PC. Better watch out.

back to a serious note. buying a very very expensive product only to have its warranty voided.

as to what it is worth? eyes of the beholder.

you're comparing a used card to a brand new card. even if you open the box and take the titan out, but never install it, if you tried to sell it, you would not get a new card price. buying used is always an option, but like joker said, be wary, as those cards may have had their warranty's voided.

actually before the 780's launch. titan were selling for $1000+ on ebay regardless of new or open box or used. now that 780's is out and about. titan price has finally adjusted.

back to the performance/warranty question.
a stock titan (for the sake of ensuring a valid warranty by not tampering with the bios) at $850 is still a hard sell especially when the 780 SC (warranty intact) at $660 is just as fast as a stock titan (warranty intact).

so until evga/nvidia have an "official" new bios for the titan to remedy this throttling issue.

typically if u mod the card in any degree u void your warrenty.
You barf on the bios flash... you voided your warrenty.
You change heat sinks on 70% of the vendors, you void your warrenty.
You sneeze on your card and look at it funny... as joker said big brother comes and takes your pc..

titan was always a $999 card. ebay is just targeting suckers. i got both of mine no problem after launch

anyway, i would say just go with the 780. retail OC cards will give you very similar performance for a decent chunk cheaper. as even you said, some people do the bios reflash, which would void the warranty. if you buy a brand new 780, you are guaranteed to have the warranty. you could also wait a few weeks/1 month when used 780s hit ebay for less than $650!

plus, if you save that $200, you could just use it to start your gtx 800 savings fund

Only fools justify a £600 780 GTX based on a £840 Titan.

I wouldnt touch either card unless they were 50% less than what Nvidia is asking

lightly used 780 sc for ~550-575 sound like a better value.
