What I'd like to know is why this isn't branded quadro.

Isn't Quadro just their name for the cards with the professional drivers? My guess is that they either aren't selling that right now or they don't have the professional drivers finished yet so it's not being branded as one.

To confirm my previous statement, here is Ryan Shrout's comments about the Adrenalin driver:

there are people that I saw in the comments on this video and in our post talking about 'oh finally we are gonna get the huge vega performance increase'. I hate, eh, let me just settle everybody down here: that's not going to happen. There's not a 20% increase in GPU performance that's happening with this. This is much more about features and capabilities, and UI elements, and making everything easier to use.

Can I work too?
How much does papa Jensen pay per post?

You're right.
Quadro name simply gives you quality extended support and certified drivers.

It seems its not that much faster than the 1080ti in games. Seems to be positioned to AI/data customers who can't afford 10k dollar gpu's, but of course need probably 5 or more for heir work and now they can afford it, while also being semi into gaming.

didn't they try this price before with Titan Z? ans wasn't it mostly a gaming card in the end?

TitanZ was mostly just odd I think

This chip has some very clear markets for deep learning & things.

If this $3,000 is part of some new trickle down pricing strategy then its a good thing my 1080ti has a ton of Vram because I'll be using it a looooooong time.
I can just see it now: All new Volta 1180Ti! Available now for only $999.9999

Well, they need to maintain their margins.

GeForce = Desktop Gaming
Quadro = Desktop ProViz (Professional Visualization)

Yup, have to wait for GeForce 2070/2080/Ti for the real consumer Volta cards. This one is a compute/AI card.

Well, this was a case of first Titan/Titan Black. Titan X (Maxwell) was really bad in compute and nV itself doesn't know how to market it (Is it a gaming card or not?), but fans buys it anyway... so who cares

It seems like nV is trying a new pricing experiment. If people will buys this, they could buy GTX "2080" for 799 or even 899 USD, couldn't they? And some folks here even applauded them for this... this is sick.

It's a 815mm^2 die.

That's silly and you know it.

It still has some decent applications.
It's basically a non-headless cutdown V100.
Perfect for personal ML/DL workstation.

Exactly. ideal for hobbyists, self-employed or (small) companies doing their first tries in deep learning. For that it is actually pretty cheap. A similar priced Intel CPU will be around 100x times slower in deep learning. And if you consider what money you can make with the right idea and model...

Why do we still have nVidia and AMD sub-forums? This entire forum is a shell of its former self and those sub-forums don't make sense. Get rid of them and move the existing threads into this forum.

Its a question of what you've lost - if it was mostly random unpleasant infighting then honestly we're better off without it.

Abso-freaking-lutely. The current arrangement is weird as heck. We have a Volta thread here and in the Nvidia sub-forum. Technically, there should only be one thread in the Nvidia sub-forum and this thread shouldn't exist, but anything that is moved to a sub-forum loses a large amount of visibility. Actually a good many of the threads in the main forum should belong to one subforum or the other.

Either the main forum shouldn't exist, or the sub-forums shouldn't exist since the way things are set up now are just a giant mess. I'd prefer to get rid of the sub-forums since it's easier to have all the content I might be interested in a single place, but the important thing is to just be consistent.
