Drizzy,
In terms of a rescue situation, where people cut STEEL off you ALL the TIME, my comment was very relevant. Im not spreading any myths by saying that its softer than steel, and you're not telling a lie by saying its harder than gold. no need to over-react. god.
And btw, unless you wear 24K gold, you're probably going to lose a finger on a gold ring too.
Actually saying it is softer than steel IS a myth. or just plain wrong however you want to look at it. Do your homework. Most titanium jewelry that is sold is "aircraft grade" titanium which is a type of titanium that is harder than most steel.
Titanium comes in no less than 29 recognized grades. It is indeed possible to get a "soft" titanium. It is true that most titanium jewelry is either aircraft (Grade 9) or one of the ten different commercially pure (CP) varieties. But a reputable jeweler will not sell you crap. The easiest way to tell is with mixed designs. No one sells an 18k gold band with low grade titanium. Then again no one sells 24k gold with ANY titanium b/c 24k gold is REALLY soft. You cannot use the terms "hardness" and "strength" interchangeably.
For personal experience, I've owned two titanium bicycles, titanium eyeglass frame, a titanium/18k gold wedding band, and one car with titanium valve springs.
As for rings, it's going to be difficult to cut ANY titanium band but it's certainly not impossible. But re-sizing a ring is typically limited to 1/2 size or less . . . depending on the titanium grade and design of the ring.
Regardless, it's a great metal . . . notwithstanding the horrible environmental toll that comes from extraction and processing.
