I already have one and cannot live without it, but am seriously considering another for the other TV I have. A $50 pricetag only makes it sweeter. Thanks.

And, remember, if you have more than one, subscriptions for the additional units are only $6.95 a month.

Yeah This isn't as good as the deal bestbuy had, but it's a good price.

No stores around here. Closest is an hour and 15 minutes and I don't have time to go get it.

Does anyone know what happens if you cancle the service and restart it?

I ask because I'm going to be working at a good job for about another year and can afford the monthly service. In a year I start grad school and money's going to be really tight. If I pay monthly for a year, then cancle it, would I be able to reactivate the tivo later?

I wish this was a direct tivo I would be all over it. I got my first one about 11 months ago it is great.

Mr Bond I don't have a regular tivo so I could be wrong. I think you can choose from 2 options. Pay a monthly fee or pay a lifetime fee. I don't know what either are since I have a direct tivo. Maybe someone else can clarify.

Here you go. If you want to shell out $300 now you can keep using it.

It would make sense that you COULD do this. For example if you had the monthly service and decided to sell your TIVO to someone else, they would have to re-activate it. I know for a fact I did this with my ReplayTV 5040 a few months ago. Or another route would be to get the lifetime activation while you still have the cash

this is a seriously sweet deal ... i was really thinking of doing it a bb earlier this week for $90, for $50 it seems like a no brainer ... except for one thing - almost looks like they are trying to get rid of these units. is tivo phasing them out for something so much better i'll regret not having it?

Some of the hacker sites are saying the old series 2 (black) has better specs than the new series 2 (silver). They say the new tivo hardware is all about saving money.

MUst resist, I was working on building a PC based PVR using sageTV and eventually switching to mythTV, but I manageed to snag one of the free tivos from best buy. I figured it would probablly be less intimidating(if not easier)for my girlfriend to learn to use the tivo as opposed to sage or myth. But now I can get another for 50.00 bucks. But alas I was building the PC PVR to avoid the monthly fees. Now I have to pay 12.95/month, if I get another that makes it 19.90 a month.

Hmmm, well from what i see if you want to upgrade the unit, the silver one can accept drives over 137gb while the black cannot.

If that's true keep in mind there is one only $30 more after rebate at amazon and would be worth it for those who want a larger drive.

To my knowledge there is no difference in the kernel between the 2 tivos that you speak of. Tivo software is based on linux. A way around has been found and it can be found at Tivo community. As far as I know it will work on any unit even the series 1. I have not tried it I am very green at linux. I stuck to a 120Gig and now my direct tivo will hold 107 hours of recordings.

Either way no tivo will accept the full size of a drive of larger than 137Gig out of the box. Hacking is required. If you are comfortable with that you are in.

I wish, nope.

In order to receive the $100 rebate you need to activate and pay the $12.95/mo (or $299 lifetime) fees.

No. The rebate states that it is not valid till 30 days after service has been activated. Basically you have to have 1 month under your belt before you send it in.

BTW, this rebate takes forever. My $50 rebate has been sitting at the "Ready to mail" stage for about 6 weeks now. I sent it in about 12 weeks ago.

Hmmm, well i know you have to prepare the drives on your computer for both, but everything im seeing shows that the Silver box has lba48 support for larger drives already included. Therefore, no "hacking" needed.
