Some of the hacker sites are saying the old series 2 (black) has better specs than the new series 2 (silver). They say the new tivo hardware is all about saving money.
Hmmm, well from what i see if you want to upgrade the unit, the silver one can accept drives over 137gb while the black cannot.
To my knowledge there is no difference in the kernel between the 2 tivos that you speak of. Tivo software is based on linux. A way around has been found and it can be found at Tivo community. As far as I know it will work on any unit even the series 1. I have not tried it I am very green at linux. I stuck to a 120Gig and now my direct tivo will hold 107 hours of recordings.
Either way no tivo will accept the full size of a drive of larger than 137Gig out of the box. Hacking is required. If you are comfortable with that you are in.
Hmmm, well i know you have to prepare the drives on your computer for both, but everything im seeing shows that the Silver box has lba48 support for larger drives already included. Therefore, no "hacking" needed.

Good thing because I finally opened our FREE TIVO which is silverish with white front panel.
