Hmmm, well from what i see if you want to upgrade the unit, the silver one can accept drives over 137gb while the black cannot.

To my knowledge there is no difference in the kernel between the 2 tivos that you speak of. Tivo software is based on linux. A way around has been found and it can be found at Tivo community. As far as I know it will work on any unit even the series 1. I have not tried it I am very green at linux. I stuck to a 120Gig and now my direct tivo will hold 107 hours of recordings.

Either way no tivo will accept the full size of a drive of larger than 137Gig out of the box. Hacking is required. If you are comfortable with that you are in.

Hmmm, well i know you have to prepare the drives on your computer for both, but everything im seeing shows that the Silver box has lba48 support for larger drives already included. Therefore, no "hacking" needed.

Good thing because I finally opened our FREE TIVO which is silverish with white front panel.

w00t!

Im probably going to pick up the silver one and pop a 200-250gb drive as a replacement.

It seems that they are out of stock online, and every B&M around me. Anyone have the scoop on if they will have more stock???

Looks like I stand corrected.

Well the kernel will now be available so I can put this extra 160Gig I have in my tivo. Now I just have to order the mounting kit for the second drive.

It's a good thing that it's not available online because If you don't have time to get it, you don't have time to watch it.

That was a really snotty comment and I don't like it one bit. You obviously didn't think before you spoke. Did you even read the post? Its an hour and fifteen minutes drive (ONE WAY). Thats 3 hours of drive time, not counting the time spent at the store. Furthermore, Circuit City is not open 24/7, or didn't you know this? Also, what if driving there interferes with shows that I don't want to miss??? Did you think of that? If I could order it online there is no question that I would have time to watch it. In fact it would make it easier on me because I could watch the shows at the times that are convenient for me.

So get this straight, YOU DONT KNOW ME, or my schedule. What if I am working during Circuit City's store hours? Then I guess since I'm not available during those hours I shouldn't ever get a Tivo because I would never have time to watch it. Is that what you are saying? Because that is totally stupid.

I think you just go around making stupid comments to get your post tally up Mr. Golden Member.

I think you need to brush up on your math skills, Mr. Member.

Its an hour and fifteen to the nearest city with a Circuit City store. 15 min each way allocated for driving through city traffic to get to the actual store.

Apparently, Mr. Diamond Member likes to improve his post tally as well.

I hate to return to the point, but can we get these anymore? It seems like a good deal, but I don't have any in stock in my area.

Is this a really good deal, or are there others like this? Is this going to be a common price?

LOL......... you never cease to make me laugh allisolm.

But yes, there are plenty good good deals on TiVo's and hopefully that will continue. TiVo is supposed to be one of the hottest items this holiday season.

I got one. It turns out one of the local stores had one in stock, but online it said none. It pays to give them a call.

So, is there a site dedicated to hacks/upgrades for the TCD24004A? (there is lots of info out there, but it is hard to sift through to find the relevant info.)

Thanks!
