TiVo has a new rebate for $150 here on series 2.

Newegg has it for $89.99 before rebate here.

Dell has it for $99.99 before rebate here.

edit: adding Circuit City 140hr for $49.99 AR here.

There don't seem to be any restrictions on the seller or the amount you have to pay in the rebate terms and conditions.

Any reasons why these shouldn't work?

Does require activation, but that has been true of all TiVo rebates and you have to stay active for a year or get charged a cancellation fee.

looks like a good deal, is TIVO a lot better than the comcast DVR?

It doesn't require you to pay for that year in advance, just keep it active for the year or pay a cancellation fee.

Why would someone want to buy it and then not use it?

some people might think from your thread title that they can use the rebate, cancel after 1 month, then resell the tivo on ebay to make a profit. i'm just making sure they know there's a 1 year contract.

Ah, not being an ebay seller, I tend not to think about that and I did put the one year thing in the OP.

I have a Toshiba Tivo with DVD Burner (which I *believe* is the same as the Humax, just rebadged) and I love it. It's easy as pie to burn out to DVD, and you can do it while recording something and watching something else. You also get all of the Tivo "Trick Play" features while watching DVD's, like the 8-second instant replay etc.

In short, it's awesome.

Would you mind posting the model #?

Hold on, if you sign a year contract and pay $155, you get the $150 rebate? So that means you pay $5 for the service + cost of equipment? I might jump on this deal if this is the case, can someone confirm for me please.

The way I read it, you buy the unit, activate it, send in for the rebate, pay a monthly fee ($12.95 if it's your first unit, $6.95 if it's at least a 2nd unit)and continue to pay that monthly fee for a year. Sometime during that year your rebate will arrive. After 1 year you will be free to cancel your subscription service without any penalty. If you discontinue service during the first year, they will charge you a $150 early cancellation fee.

If you buy the 40hr unit from Newegg or Dell, I don't see why you would not get back at least your purchase price. In fact, I don't see anything on the rebate from that would keep you fromgetting $150 back even if you only spent $89.99, but I wouldn't complain if they decided to just rebate purchase price.

Jassi, basically, the rebate and 1 year service is a wash. You just pay the price for the cost of equipment.

The CC rebate that makes the 140 hour Tivo 49.99 is the same rebate as the rebate in the first link right?

If those are 2 seperate rebates, then this deal is scorchingly hot.

The best deal is getting a Direct TV TiVo unit. You only pay $4.99 a month for the TiVo service and you can have as many TiVo units as you wish without paying extra (you only pay for having another receiver). Also it has two tuners, so you can be recording one channel and watching another channel simultaneously. It can also be recording two channels while you watch a recorded program. A stand-alone TiVo unit cannot even come close to this. I currently have two of these at my home and I love them. I also sell moded TiVos in eBay (with the HMO software) with different capacities on the hard drives. With two 320GB hard drives I can make a 557 hour TiVo unit! It will take years of recording (and no deleting) to run out of space on that baby. Forget about getting those TV program Season DVD sets. You will already have all the seasons neatly organized in folders on your TiVo. Awesome

This seems like a hot deal on a decent product! My hatred of commercials is rivaled only by my hatred of having to figure out when Comedy Central is showing various shows (they tend to switch their times around relatively frequently). I've got basic cable that comes free with my condo homeowners dues and I've recently noticed that I spend more time than I'd like sitting in fron of the TV flipping around between the two-three shows I like to watch come on.

My question is: how does the TiVo know what time various shows are on? Does it have to be connected to a phoneline and updated frequently? Having my TiVo unit permanently connected to either a phone line or a broadband connection is just not feasible for me. If I had to disconnect the TiVo unit and connect it to a phone line frequently, I suspect I'd start getting a little pissy.

Also, when you do connect it, do you have to have a screen connected? My phone and broadband lines are clear across the house from my TV. It would take a good 100 ft of cable to connect the two and I really don't want the cable or phone guys screwing with my connections. It's taken a long time to get everything to work appropriately.

The other option I've considered is the use of a All-In-Wonder tpe card or something other capture card to record the shows onto a PC. If the TiVo unit requires frequent connection, I may have to consider this option though.

Thanks!

If you have a home network you can have your TiVo access that via wireless adapter. It does have to be connected to something as it isn't psychic enough to just intuit the tv schedule. It connects daily and carries the schedule two weeks into the future.

Check here for specifics.

Are you saying you use the circuit city rebate at newegg.com??? That is impossible, it says so in the form.

This form from the TiVo site as mentioned in the OP.

I just recently switched from DTV (with Tivo) to Adelphia cable with their DVR - which, IMHO, blows goat nuts. I would love to ditch the cable DVR and get TIVO but I have heard that there are terrible delays when changing channels with that sort of setup and you essentially can't "channel surf." Also the telephone-line program guide update thing just sucked for DTV and was always going out and missing programs. Any thoughts from cable users with TIVO?

Yes, that is correct with a stand-alone TiVo unit. The DirecTV unit gets the information from the satellite feed and, when modified, never needs to dial TiVo central.

Also, when you do connect it, do you have to have a screen connected? My phone and broadband lines are clear across the house from my TV. Using a computer to record is OK, but troublesome. TiVo units are Linux-based computers optimized/built to record and store video. They are light years more efficient than general-purpose computers.

Thanks!
