What is the difference between this and the Tivo Series 3?
How is TiVo HD different from the TiVo Series3 HD Digital Media Recorder?
Both products are designed on the Series3 architecture so the core TiVo functionality is the same. However, the TiVo Series3 HD Digital Media Recorder will remain as our premium HD DVR product with features such as a bigger hard drive (250gb), THX Certification, front panel display and a programmable, back-lit remote control.

if you already have an older tivo with lifetime service you can transfer your lifetime service to your new hd machine for $199

I've given this some thought... if you plan on keeping the old tivo active... it's better to not tranfer the lifetime service because it only cost around $7 a month for each additional tivo, which would just come out to $74 for the year since the lifetime is free. (multi-tivo discount)
but if you transfer the service its $200 and then the other tivo is free for a year... but as soon as that year is up, it will be $74 for the year for the other Tivo... so in a nutshell, you are giving tivo $126 for free for doing basically nothing for the 1st year.
I personally would like to spend that money on something else.
It's only good to transfer the lifetime subscription if you don't plan on using the other tivo anymore... or its broke.

There is one small problem with that logic. If your old Tivo stops working, and you didn't transfer the lifetime subscription, you will no longer qualify for the discounted rate of $6.95/mo, because to continue to qualify for it, the old unit has to make a call in at least every six months or you lose the discount.
I'm facing a difficult choice, because I just ordered and received a Tivo Series 3 from Amazon a couple days ago, right before the announcement for the Tivo HD lifetime transfer offer came out. There's a $200 rebate on the Series 3, but no offer to transfer the lifetime subscription. Amazon had it for $574.99, minus the $30 or so that I had left from a gift certificate, and minus the ~$17 or so of additional gift certificate credit that I'll get from using my Amazon credit card there. It also had free shipping, so the grand total after rebate (for me, anyway) about $328, which seems like a good deal for something that was $799 a year ago.
If I return the Series 3 to Amazon and order the Tivo HD from Tivo directly (which you have to do to qualify for the lifetime transfer), it'll cost me $299.99 + $199 to transfer the lifetime subscription + however much to send the Series 3 back to Amazon, and I'll be getting a slightly lower-capacity unit with no monthly fees and a free year on my old Series 1, which I'm not even sure I'll continue to use.
Ugh. Why do they have to make it so complicated?

so if you use tivo w/ comcast, do you not have to pay the 11$ for the DVR service? It would be normal comcast price + CC service + tivo service right? If so, that wouldn't be too much more per month.
