To all LCD owners: Dead pixels a problem?

Have been considering getting an LCD and looking at their problems, the biggest concern for me now, is that of dead pixels. I would just like to hear people's experience with dead pixels. When you got your LCD did you have any? If you have never had a dead pixel can I ask what model LCD you have and how long for?

Also are dead pixels more common to have when you open the box, or are they more likely to crop up down the road after like 6 months of use or whatever.

One last thing, is the Hitachi CML174SXW's prone to dead pixels? Can anyone with this monitor tell me if it?fs been a problem for them?

Thanks.

None on mine. Samsung 151Q, had it for about 10 months now.

I had the opportunity to inspect the panel before I purchased.

The only LCD I have at the moment is a 14" XGA on my laptop.
I am pretty picky and it took me about 3 days to spot 2 stuck pixels on it,
they are light blue colored and right next to each other. At first I was
disturbed by them but after reading about worse cases of dead pixels
I felt better and learned to not be bothered by them.

From what I gather the LCD manufacturing process has improved alot over
the years so dead pixels are alot less common then they were several years ago.

If I were you I would not expect to have a perfect LCD, otherwise you are setting
yourself up for disapointment if you get one that has a few dead pixels.

I am nervously awaiting my 1800FP from Dell which is arriving tomorrow. I will
accept up to 4 dead pixels if they are in decent locations and are not stuck red
or green.

I think I am alot pickier than most people when it comes to video quality so
if I can live with a few dead pixels then I think most people can, the key is
learning to live with them...understand that this is how it is with LCDs and
that the problem is not likely to worsen.

I have 3 stuck/dead pixels. Don't bother me, infact it took me a couple of weeks to realize i even had them. Only time i notice them is if somebody mentions dead pixels, and i actively look for them.

I bought a Planar 19" LCD from Dell back in (I think) October 2002. It arrived with no dead pixels, still has none that I've seen.

I've had a Planar 15" since last september, and have never noticed any dead pixels.

Slightly OT, but I do wonder though if the backlight is going on me here? I've noticed recently that it takes progressively longer for the monitor to "wakeup" from powersave mode (I don't use a screensaver; just let it shut off after a few minutes). I move the mouse and the screen comes up, but it's pretty dim, and it sometimes takes a while for it to get as bright as it should be, which isn't all that much. The brightness control on the monitor is turned almost all the way down. just wondering.

Viewsonic 19"
1 stuck pixel (uum I know its here somewhere) - a year and a half later its just the same...

Seems like as yields improve dead pixels are becoming less common..

should be a couple of years, as long as it's not left on 24/7/365. That said, I still think mine might be going on me. Good thing this monitor is still under warranty for a while.

I've had 3 Dell 1900FP all with dead/stuck red pixels. I'm pretty picky, considering at the time i purchased it, everybody who also got the Dell 1900FP had no dead pixels. go figure. For now, my 19inch crt will suffice, until my 23inch Apple Cinema HD arrives! haha in my dreams

Its not that everyone but you gets good LCDs its just that you can see them and they cannot.

I hear Apple is the worst when it comes to dead pixels...not that there are alot of them but they
will not replace ones with dead pixels unless half of them are dead or something rediculous like that.
That is what I have read anyways.

Samsung 171S here, and only 1 dead pixel in a really "convenient" location. In all honesty, they're hardly noticeable unless you're looking at that specific area, and it's on a white background.

Not really true. A buddy sent back a monitor with 4 dead pixels to Apple and it was replaced.
I don't think any company will replace a monitor with only one dead pixel. While each company is slightly different in their threshhold of what they'll accept as a return, I don't think Apple's any worse than any other.

Hitachi CML174: I've looked high and low and have yet to find a dead, or stuck, pixel. Same with the screen on my Inspiron 8200.

First off a Pixel is made up of Sub-Pixels, three or four I can't remember now. A dead pixel means that the pixel is completely turned off, or completely black. A dead subpixel means that one of them is not working so you'll find that the color isn't what it should be. I hope I'm close with my explanation, I'm pretty sure I am. I'm also sure if I'm not, someone will correct me.

As far as my LCD, I have a Hitachi CML174. No dead Pixels or Sub-Pixels, I've only had it less than a month though.

I have two 19-in Viewsonic VX-900s - going on a 8 months - no dead pixels. Have had 4 laptops of different makes - no dead pixels. I'm not sure if statistically it is a real problem. Maybe only if you buy el cheapo stuff.
