When I turned 16 the best job I could get paid $2.85/hr and this was 1979 during the second gas crisis and the price of gas shot up to $.90-1.00. That means I could buy about 3 gallons of gas for one hours worth of work. Did I complain? No because I really didn't have a reference point of prices being less. You are now complaining about paying $2.50 for gas when you are making anywhere from $8-12/hr (I base this off what all the teenagers I know make) in a basically unskilled job so that makes you actually better off then we were 26 years ago. Do the math. Even at $3 a gallon it isn't much different than it used to be. Gas has been TOO cheap for TOO long and now people expect it....yet they will pay $1.29 for a 20 oz bottle of water. I think if you readjusted your priorities gas would not seem so bad.

You forgot to add how you walked to school in a blizzard, uphill on a 60-degree incline, on broken glass, through minefeilds, carrying your younger brother & sister on your back.

Um, I don't know too many 16 year olds that make $12 an hour. Hell, I had a good internship that only paid $15 an hour.

I'm starting to hate this gas price vs bottled water comparison.

You have a choice to buy or not buy bottled water.

if you are complaining about any gas prices while living in the states, you guys are pvssys. try living in europe (and all your prices are in gallons, whereas in most of europe, it's per liter (1 gallon = 3.78541 litres)

/me puts on flame suit

Well, as so often is the case, the whining can be deferred to stupidity. People are dumb, and they complain whenever they can about anything they can.

Actually I complain a lot, but I like these raised gas prices, because they just may educate the public a little bit on what they have, what is finite, and how to manage money. Not much of a hope of that, of course, but one can dream.

Plus only crack heads actually buy much bottle water, especially at retail prices. I can buy a gallon of it at walmart for $.55 or something. Find me gas at that price

agreed, but lower gas price still = better. raising prices will hurt the economy in terms of more unemployment, higher prices etc

 I walk everywhere now, and only drive to the grocery store and random stuff... so I don't particarly care that much.

(by the way, energy costs are very influential in regards to inflation)

Adjusted for inflation, gas would have to go up another 34% to match the peak that was reached in 1981.

The low gas prices we've had are bad in the long run, as consumption increases, which increases prices anyway, while also reducing amount of use we'll get out of the oil we have, not to mention the sudden shock when prices rise.

It's killin me right now, my gf is doing her last Medical rotation in bumfvck maryland (lexington park for those in the know). This is a very long drive. And with the rise in gas prices, it is also a very expensive ride. Sure I guess we're not as bad off as the children starving in africa, but I still reserve my constitutional right to bitch, moan, whine, and complain.

EDIT: and anyway you look at it, it's a significant increase in the cost of living in this country.

EU vs USA argument = apples vs oranges. When I don't need a car, then it will compare. It's totally unrealistic for me to ride a bike to work.

Really rather incomporable. How many people in Amsterdamn live 20 miles from work? How many live 3 miles from the closest store, 5 from the closest grocer, etc.? The structure of cities is totally different in most of North America to European cities, where a greater percentage of people live in close proximity to their jobs/services.
DobojiMarry her and her wages will cover the gas increase!

actually, they just rolled all the way home - but on the way down, they hit icy moguls which were randomly placed amidst the mines. they were usually already bruised and battered due to the severe beatings from the head-mistress. those one-room schools were conducive to cabin fever, you know. all this on an empty stomach because one ration of tapioka pudding for lunch never seemed to satisfy. not to mention earaches from being pulled around by the ear all day.
