Yeah, but for many of us there are limits to compromise. When I used to walk to work it didn't affect me, besides any consumer prices, what gas cost. It could be $50/gallon and I didn't care. Europeans say their $5/gallon is high, so stop complaining, but many have options that many americans don't have, like walking to work or cycling around, or taking public transit. If a guy in London pays $5/gallon but goes through 300/year, whereas I'm paying $2.50 but cranking through 1700 (which I do), it hurts me a lot more!

the average commute in Europe and the USA is more or less the same

USA commute

Euro commute
High gas prices hurt those who do a lot of miles, but a disproportionate amount of populations in western europe are able to walk or bike or take public transport.
with 28% of people in Cambridge cycling to work
I mean golly, I'd be shocked if even one out of 500 people in Birmingham, AL cycle to work

I agree, I agree but I just wanted to point out that a lot of people in the USA could use something else then a car to go from A to B (if the public transportation doesn't suck of course)

Actually I complain a lot, but I like these raised gas prices, because they just may educate the public a little bit on what they have, what is finite, and how to manage money. Not much of a hope of that, of course, but one can dream.
I'm starting to hate this gas price vs bottled water comparison.

You have a choice to buy or not buy bottled water.
Plus only crack heads actually buy much bottle water, especially at retail prices. I can buy a gallon of it at walmart for $.55 or something. Find me gas at that price

tap water is free and tastes fine where Im from..

bottled water is for Yuppie Pansies...

Until you have served on an Aircraft Carrier and the water all tastes like Jetfuel (not joking) yet you drink 10 gallons of this crap a day caue your in the middle of the indian Ocean and it's 120 on the flight deck...
you can BITE ME
Bottled water pffft
panseys...

now gimme my freaking gas...

because then it will actually be expensive and all the whining will be warranted. expensive to the point where some people could not afford to drive - as opposed to expensive enough to whine about it, but not actually change habits. i could care less what kind of car people drive, i am just sick of hearing all this bs whining.

I drink tap water at home, but there's not too much of an option when I'm on a long car trip or something.

look at it this way

a $1 / gallon increase translates to $750 a year based on a 20 mpg car and 15000 miles

$750 may or may not be to some people but to most people complaining that $750 can easily be made up over the course of a year

$62 / month at $1 and considering that gas isnt even a full dollar above before the increases

you have no right to complain if:

1.) you drive a highly inefficient car/truck that you do not need (towing your boat is not a NEED)

2.) can reduce your driving mileage relatively easily (carpool public transportion etc.)

3.) your car requires premium gas (goes along with option 1)

if you are not doing everything you can do to reduce your consumption you really shouldnt complain

and if you have been than more than likely these price hikes are barely going to have any effect on you at all

The only thing I complain about is the fact that the US Army can just march into almost any Middle East country and just jack the oil making oil prices to become $0.25/gallon (as it should be). Oh and also the numbnut enviromentalists who oppose drilling [anywhere] yet complain that gas prices are too high/price for goods is too high/etc buy bottled water and do sht that we logical people just see as stupid.

EVERYTHING in Europe is expensive because their government tax the hell out of them. I mean, they need that money for their free healthcare and other free stuff, right?

Here's how it breaks down for me in my V6 Accord in SoCal driving 350 miles a week (regular gas):

Lowest gas price 4-5 months ago $1.81 = $101.36/mo.
Current gas prices $2.60 = $145.60

That's when you compare it to the low price. If you raise the price up to what people still consider reasonable (I'd say $2.15 a gallon) it drops to a $25 a month difference. Now $25 a month is nothing to get worked up about in my eyes...

The cost of gas in the US is still 1/2 to 1/3 compared to elsewhere with very high fuel tax.

When I left the states gas was around $1.80 a gallon. I don?t think I could have much to complain about anyways as my car gets over 30 miles to a gallon. I now work in Europe and where I am at in Kosovo it is about 90 euro cents per liter so at all 3.79 liters to a gallon you figure I am paying around $4.40 per gallon at the current exchange rates. It is a good thing I don?t do a lot of driving over here.

Since I walk and take public transportation to work (2hrs/day), I have the right to complain about how there are still a lot of people who drive just for the convenience, therefore, their convenience > price of gas.
