Oh look, it's another Bose thread!

Well, just let me chime in ...

Everyone knows the drill:

No highs, no lows - must be Bose!

or

Bose. Better sound through marketing!

That last line is for CocoGdog. But hey, if you enjoy your Bose product then who am I to criticize?!

Those swans kick some serious butt, but they require an amp.
I doubt his grandma can really appreciate the good sound anyways, she's probably half deaf like most other grandmas.

In college, I worked for College Activities. In the equipment closet they had that older Bose radio that they used to advertise on TV... I dont remember the model (6 years ago now) but I remember at the time that it was old for 1999.. it was curved, about a foot and a half tall, and was just a standalone CD player. Anywho, it was basically setup for people that wanted to have a CD player in a room for an event. At the time, I was blind and had never used it. I was like WOW! these things are expensive! They MUST be good. Every time I saw it in the closet, I wanted to take it out and try it.

After a few months, I finally had the opportunity to set it up for an event because not many people actually required JUST a CD player. I popped in a CD I had with me and turned it on expecting pure bliss. What I was greeted with was pure garbage. It had zero range and sounded quite hollow. It did get pretty loud but in a small room it doesnt need to be loud. I was very dissapointed and chalked it up to the fact it was old. Then I found out they payed $1k for it only a few years before :Q

It didnt sound that way because it was failing, it sounded that way because it was Bose. From that day, I swore never to buy into marketing again; that I'd try before I buy on large purchases.

My friend didnt heed my advice... No, he purchased fairly recently a 7.1 Bose system for his home theatre. He thinks it sounds great, but I'm never happy with the audio when we're watching a flick at his place. My $250 Logitech 5.1 set that is hooked up to my TV sounds better than his.

Any audiophile will tell you that Bose is simply low end to lower-mid range stuff at best. I work for an audio company and Bose is definately never mentioned as competition when we compare sound quality.

meh...half the people on ths board who criticize Bose only do so because people who know what they are talking about criticize it to. The real thruth is that Bose is fine for your average low-mid range consumer. It's true, aduphiles would not touch Bose with a stick, but that is because it usually has "poor" range compared to the more expensive competetion they are used to having. For movies, bose is fine as long as you have it on surround. For music though, meh, it not close to the best, but it defibately is not the worst.

The bashing comes from the FACT that it is severely overpriced and it is not fine, it is the bottom of the barrel sound quality wise. bottom of the barrel.

My man, it's not fine. If you want to believe that - that's your prerogative.

I'll echo the opinion espoused above.

Paying an embarrassing amount of money for a mediocre product or a half-assed product propped up by huge marketing and ignorant/uneducated customers doesn't make it "okay".

Having Bose take advantage of said customers does not make it "okay"

The truth is that this happens everyday in our society. But it doesn't make it "okay". It just happens.

I just cringe when I see Bose so called Lifestyle systems go for 2k when you can buy 3x the sound and quality for the same price. But if you can reach these uneducated/ignorant customers through the advertising pages of a magazine all they think about when going shopping is "Bose, Bose" even despite better advice. They won't listen. That's too bad.

Also, having people robotically echoing anti-Bose sentiments isn't right, per se, but it's the step in the right direction.

Where there's smoke there's fire. How does a stereotype become a stereotype? Because there's some truth therein.

Sorry. I have a pair of 201 bookshelf speakers and boy was I dumb to get those. $200 and they sound worse than the speakers they replaced (circa 70's Pioneer bookshelfs).

Honestly... most people wouldn't know good sound if it walked up to them and smacked them on the back of the head. Not putting down your grammy, it's just the case. If she wants the Bose, I'd say get it for her. She might consider anything else to be cheap and sound bad, even if it sounds better. It's more of a status thing, especially for middle age & older folk. Especially females - they care almost exclusively about status and what things cost.

Bose doesn't sound as awful as many people imply. Rather, for what their products cost you can get far superior equipment. Because of this overpricing and their deceptive advertising, many people feel a well-deserved animosity toward them.

It's business. Business thirves on dumb people. You proved my point, Bose is just mediocre. In other words it gets the job done for a few. It's not horrible but every single thing in the market is not better. It's average at best. My gripe is not with bose, cause yes, they are over priced for what it is (and if people want to buy it, let them), but my gripe is with people who just spew facts that they read on a board because someone just says so.

The Hardrock Casino in South Florida had a Tivoli CD/Radio in our room. It sounded WAY better than a Boise wave to me.

A lot of the stuff are fine, but have you even heard them before?
My friend has the Bose 2.1 DVD audio system. They cost roughly $900 for that POS, and they sound like a pair of cheap $80 computer speakers with overexaggerated boomy bass. Even a $150 set of computer speakers would EASILY sound better whilst costing a tiny fraction of the price.

I knew what you were saying. The only issue that I took exception was the way you said "The real thruth is that Bose is fine for your average low-mid range consumer." because you didn't seem to differentiate the difference between:

- Bose products fine for the average consumer

and

- Bose products have a bad rep and animosity from critics because their "fine for average consumer" products are way overpriced and are outperformed by other products at a fraction of the Bose product.

Sure, A piece of crud car is fine for me to drive to buy groceries on a daily basis.

But when I pay 60k for that piece of crap as a daily driver I could have bought a Lexus or a [insert nice car here] instead. That's the point I was trying to make with Bose.
