It is quite convenient how people just ignore the parts that talk about slavery, treating women as property.

Also, telling women that they have no authority to teach or have authority over a man.

Yeah, God is all encompassing and fair.

Also.. if God is all knowing.. he should treat women fairly and not like property. Bible merely conveys the morality of a bunch of men during the bronze age.

Such ownage.

The religious people should not try to win. You need to step back and just have your faith. Science does not deal with faith so you can have your own little special place where nobody can pick on you. That doesn't make you any less stupid if you have faith in the Easter bunny, the rapture, and the coming of Jesus, but having faith in god(s) is your right and not something that science or logic can trounce you with.

Like how to deal with our own human nature. Still relevant 2,000 years later.

You mean like that?

You mean like predicting money as the downfall of morals? It seems to be a cyclical event in history. The "money at all costs" view today and the downfall in religion that follows is highly linked in my mind.

They are all sources of power: religion, government, money, information, and military.

The military usually doesn't have its own power, it tends to follow whomever is most popular at the time. The crusades were military backing of religion (A time that would make this one look bizarre). The uprisings in Egypt were the military backing the people. The military is more of a follower and not typically a leader.

Money and wall street hold all the power right now. Everything from elections to corporations, its all about the money. It seemed inevitable, right? Like how long could morals and values last when SHTF and people would do anything for it? I think its cyclical of developed civilizations no matter the technology. Rome, Mongolia, etc.

Government right now is even at the mercy of money, which is interesting. Wall street panicked the government into doing what they wanted.

Science/information is edging out religion but isn't as big of a player in human endeavors as people think. There is a reason humans have been around for thousands of years and science never really took off. Facts are almost irrelevant when it comes to power.

Woo, another own goal!!!

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Timothy+6:10&version=NIV

And if you take the KJV verse
For the love of money is the root of all evil

You really believe the first sin and first murder were because of money?!?

Christians who think critically don't exist.

The concept of value existed way before any religion.

Money came into existence for the sake of portability as barter system was proving to be logistically impossible on a larger scale. Money made it easy to buy and sell things.
When money itself was getting difficult to deal with people all over the world preferred credit/debit cards.

your stance is a fallacy we must argue over our beliefs.

To what end? To convince me that I'm wrong and you're right? Again, a complete waste of time and energy. Argue all you want, but it's action that matters. How do your beliefs show up in your daily life? Do you walk your talk, or is it all words and intent?

I was being sarcastic. I'm atheist but don't mind religion at all. In fact I see it as something complementary to science, and representative of something good in humanity (even if it's often distorted in practice). What annoys me is when the religious take it too far and try to condemn atheism and science.

Not his point at all. You knew that, right?

Newton was ahead of his time, when he hits his limits you guys are thinking it was due to Newtons ignorance.

It shows how much you guys throw that word around, ignorance! ignorance! ignorance! Newton still made solid contributions, he was clearly not ignorant.

Newton turned from the science he helped found and went down the path of alchemy, known to be nonsense even back then. Newton's contributions were immense but in this he chose willful ignorance.

I have a feeling that you don't know what the word "ignorance" means.

It means lack of knowledge; not lack of ability.

Oh by all means do actually explain how it applies to the example and how you inferred I meant it as lack of ability. The baseless attacks get old.

Religions are like penises, I know they exist, and I couldn't care less about them, and certainly don't wasn't them in my face. I know some of you do, and that's entirely your prerogative.

There have been many thoughtful responses in such a short time, I have been enjoying reading them all.

The general answer seems to be to live a good life, enjoy the time here, appreciate being alive at all.

I'm not trying to persuade anybody to anything, I beleive that people have to experience God to beleive, nobody is going to do that on a message board!

Not everyone has the power of make believe on such a level that they could delude themselves into pretending. It is great that you like to pretend and project what you want. I couldn't convince myself of something so ludicrous.

Ah, you touch on an important point for beleivers. There is no creature in the world like us human beings. The Bible says we were made in His likeness. Could this not be evidence of creation.

As to your first point, I think if I held that opinion I would drive into the Niagara River on the way home from work tomorrow.

The bible was written by ignorant humans a few thousand years ago... it has so many things wrong that it is laughable... the fact that someone could believe it has any meaning is simply amazing.. the biggest con in history I'd say.

All I can say is that my God is perfect, all knowing, all powerful. If he says heaven is perfect, who am I to try and decipher what exactly makes it that way ? I know God would not call it perfect if it didn't perfectly meet my needs or desires.

You can't say that. Saying something doesn't make it magically real.

Don't tell me about what some fantastical creature might or might not say.

Anyone could make up something and then claim that they know what it says... that isn't an argument based in reality.

Taboo: Male Virgin

You're on a roll tonight, dude!

Your OP stinks of arrogance, you came here to stir things up..then you exited the thread without making a single intelligent argument. Your kind is all too common.

Brilliant. I didn't put the two together. It is pretty funny though! If I lived such a deprived life, I'd need to come up with delusions of grandeur to justify it too!

Yup.

You are convinced to conform, sacrifice, and be dominated by rules in this life, the real one, by the promising you a better "fake" afterlife in the end.

I don't get it, you may be burned to ashes or eaten by worms but sure as fuck you'll be having an afterlife!

Being a Jew i invite all people to sit at Odins table if they can not behave themselves, if they can they can go somewhere else.

Let me light the fucking log and we're on towards the mead...

But but but but but 72 virgins. That's got to be real, otherwise it's false advertising.

Oh man... no.

I always wondered how this works with the multiple women suicide bombers coming to Israel in the last two years?

Did the men figure out that they'd only get dead and what did they promise the women?

Did they do some old testament law which is commonly only used by the anti gay people in the US or did they do.. what the hell did they tell them?
