To buy or not to buy

I'm planning on building a new computer this summer, and I'm not sure what exactly will be inside it, but I plan on paying about 1200 bucks and getting top of the line stuff and overclocking as much as possible.

Should I wait until then to buy a power supply and get something that exactly fits my needs, or should I splurge and get the 850W power supply from www.svc.com that's going for 70 dollars after rebate from coolermaster?

I'm not sure on specifics, but the review of that power supply seem good, and I don't feel like paying more for a less powerful unit later. My only concern is how I've heard their warranties are. People have had troubles when they sent their units back immediately after they came DOA, and I'm scared about what troubles I'd face if I waited 6 months to find out it was DOA.

Thanks for your thoughts.

It's 200 dollars on newegg. If 200 is being cheap I'm out haha.

What kind of benefits are seen from higher end power supplies over the coolermaster?

Honestly, I'd wait. Deals are coming and going all the time, and you don't need an 850W power supply anyway.

I was thinking more along the lines of the Seasonic PSUs in the neighborhood of 500 watts for around $100. You could also check out the Antec Earthwatts series. Good power and generally good value.

All watts are not created equal when it comes to PSUs. Besides, I doubt that $1200 can build a rig that will need more than a quality 500 watt PSU.

If I had to build it now, I'd have a

6600 quad, 8800GT SLI, a Raptor Drive, and some other stuff.

Newegg's PSU calculator, though probably incorrect, says I'd need ~700 Watts for that. Is that wrong/could the 500 watt PSUs handle that?

I guess what I'd still like to know is why I should choose these smaller PSUs over the one I mentioned:

http://www.svc.com/rs-850-emba.html

Given that you say I don't need this much power, what's the harm in having it?

Thanks for your patience with a noob like myself.

The two 'real' reviews I sawon that PSU were pretty positive. But, IMO, it's not worth it to spend money on a PSU when it's ment to power a rig that you are building in the summer, which is like half a year. By then, other, probably even better deals will come by.

There is no harm. Just a lot of people that like to tell you how to spend your money.

That Cooler Master is an excellent power supply. Excellent AR price for sure!
