To Cas2 or to Cas3??

I'm getting myself a stick of 256 before the prices SHOOT way up again. ANy recommendation? I checked sharkyextreme and the difference between the two 256Mb sticks ar about 90 bucks. I know there has been a debate between CAs2 ram and Cas3 rams. I would just wanna know your opinion. Performance gain is only 5% rite?

I just 256MB of memory for a new rig I'm putting together.

I selected two sticks of 128 MB Mushkin PC133 Rev1.5 from Mushkin.com; total price for the two sticks = $178 shipped.

This memory is only rated for CAS 3 @ 133MHz, but will easily run CAS 2 @ 133 MHz (all the tech reviewers agree on this).

There are better deals on memory than this, but the quality of lower cost modules is suspect in my mind. I'd go with the Mushkin PC133 Rev. 1.5.

Well I'd get the CAS2 stuffs... but that's me...
there are many places to get RAM from, and alot of High Quality
RAM can be found for Reasonable prices...

And as miniMunch mentioned I wouldn't rule out getting 2 128Mb
sticks as long as they are good sticks and you have to room...
and since you already have a 256Mb DIMM, and if it runs CAS2, I'd get
a matched set...

Hmm.......I just saw a site selling 256Mb of CAS3 Ram at 106bucks!

What do you think?

One more thing to add. As far as I know, Mushkin memory runs perfect on AMD chipsets/MB's. Some cheap memory modules don't run well (or at all) on some chipsets/MB's. Mushkin memory is tested and certified for AMD's and ASUS MB's which I see you have. Most cheap memory also does not run well overclocked; Mushkin does. Just go to their site and see if your not impressed.

The Mushkin 1.5 stuff is rated CAS2, not CAS3 .. but is back-ordered cuz too many of you guys been ordering it. Posted price also went up from $89 to $101. I have 2 sticks of the 1.5 stuff .. running at 2-2-2 7/9T in CUSL2.

Crucial (Micron) is good stuff too, maybe not up to par with Mushkin, but good. You can buy Crucial through ebates.com to get some money back. I think they still have a free shipping deal going on.
