To cut or not to cut.

A co-worker of mine is trying to tell me that cutting the metal grate or mesh behind or in front of the case fans will do 2 things:

* Increase airflow and cooling (duh)
* Decrease sound. (is this true?)

Is this true?

Yep it is true....

Some of the stamped metal grills are very restrictive and cause quite a bit of air turbulance.
Cutting them out and replacing them with something like this will increase airflow and decrease the noice caused by turbulance.

If your case fan grill has a nice open design like this, I wouldn't bother with cutting it.
If it doesn't... get the jigsaw out.

To OP,
Yes on both counts. The grilles on my old Enlight case were very open and actually convex so that the air didn't even hit it until it was already dispersing. But I imagine it costs quite a bit to add something like that to the tooling - it might have required a whole extra tool and die and another stamping station. Too expensive to waste on cases today. I don't know why they just don't stamp the holes out entirely and toss in a couple of those wire grilles. Naah, that's too easy...

Here's a test you can do at home: Try to lip-whistle (as opposed to the tongue and fingers method) with your mouth wide open. Now try it with your lips closer together. I can whistle both on the intake and exhaust that way...

To theman,
. Don't cut or remove those - my Berserker has similar. They are well away from the face of the fan so the air is dispersed at that point, and I'm sure there are other vents for the air to come in as well such as at the bottom, top or sides.

I wouldn't touch that Antec grill! Does the bottom of the front cover have some space for air to get to the filter?

its just plastic with holes with a filter behind it. the annoying thing is the front holes always get filled with dust.

I would put a filter right on the fan and remove the filter from right behind those grilles - that will reduce dust build-up in the mesh... This is the one I just got for my front fan: http://www.svcompucycle.com/12filguar.html . The whole thing fits behind the case bezel and the filter material is easily and cheaply replaced with air conditioner foam.

If that's the case... cut them out and replace them with something like this.

If you leave the filter right behind it, even that hex mesh will grow fuzz.
