I've started jogging to get into better shape and lose whatever fat I've got. At the same time (as per advice on the web) I've started a bodyweight exercise regimine to avoid burning muscle instead of fat.

Of course, I'm also looking for the appropriate diet to accompany this whole ordeal... the only thing I didn't want to give up was my breakfast (orange, oatmeal with milk). Then I started looking through the various foods finding high-protein, high-fiber stuff that had all the nutrients I needed. Most of the advice I read says to eat 40% carb, 40% protein, 20% fat for each meal, but also to avoid refined carbohydrates.

I'm wondering now if there's anything wrong with eating just legumes? Specifically lentils, mung beans, black beans, etc. They provide a good deal of protein, and all the vitamins found in grains in even larger quantities except Selenium (which they still provide a decent source of). They also provide carbohydrate. The only thing they lack is fat, which can be added in with a bit of olive oil.

The way I see it I run/walk in the morning and eat the grain (oatmeal), and do weight type stuff in the afternoon while eating legumes. Anyone see a problem in all this?

No.

That is fine.

The fat is fine, you will ALMOST CERTAINLY get enough of that from other sources. You want some good fats also. The issue is really over blown by people though imo.

Just eat moderate and exercise = you will get in shape!

The worse a person eats the more they have to train to compensate.

Muesli FTW! If a person replaces two of their meals with museli and had 2 other normal meal they'd drop weight in no time.

I think you could def do it, but i would add some othe types of protein and carbs to your diet, like whey, soy, egg proteins, or add some chicken, tuna, turkey. stuff like that. Plus i wonder what types of fiber you get from legumes compared to whole wheat and vegs/fruits.

Yeah, that'll work when I have stabilized my body, and I'm no longer trying to lose or gain anything. But for right now I feel much more comfortable with a regimine.

I do get a decent amount of protein (giving me a "complete" protein) from the milk and oats in the morning. Legumes have... a lot of fiber. By my estimate I'd be taking in 450% daily value everyday of fiber. I think legumes have mostly insoluble, but oats and flaxseed (I eat two tabelspoons ground flaxseed everyday) have a good amount of soluble. I also usually eat a carrot everyday.

It sounds like you've done some research....good going!

I know peanuts are legumes...what else is there? Peanuts are fantastic in moderation!

Peanuts are one of my favorite foods, the only question is can I stop with just a few handfuls? Usually I just can't. However, they'd actually be a good source of fat. Hm, that's a pretty good idea.

I think you're worrying too much. Your exercise looks fine, so just cut down on the bad stuff in your current diet. I was a sugar junkie. I cut down the lollies drastically, and the chips etc, and started eating fruit instead. Breakfast is healthy cereal, lunch is usually a wholegrain sandwich of some kind of meat with salad, and tea's usually a halthy home-cooked meal, with penty of meat for protein. Exercise for me is Taekwondo in the evenings, and the occasional bike ride on the weekend.

In my experience, it's not necessary to concentrate on eating all the right foods, just worry about not eating the bad foods.

I know where you're coming from, but I like to know exactly how I'm doing things. I like knowing exact numbers. Not only that, but I really like beans. Black beans with chili powder, lentils with garam masala, mung beans with... something. I just really like eating them, and turning every meal except breakfast into legumes wouldn't be a chore to me.
