Was just @ a local Wal Mart (they don't take reservations for gaming consoles) & saw a stack of XBoxes, I think M$ may have miscalculated the market. If Sony has gotten their production costs down on it's PS2's, they can rule the console market @ $199, or even $250.

I'd guess that Sony makes up it's profits on appx 3 games/console sold.

<< I work as an Inventory Manager for Best Buy. Yes, I have heard rumors of a price drop aroung the first of the year. I personally feel this will happen. Sony has already recouped R&D costs for the system by this time. Profit is made in games and accessories, not systems-that's a fact. By lowering the price $100, sales would skyrocket again, along with games and accessories(read profits). I see no way this would happen until at least the end of Jaunary, in order to protect price match policies.

But the thing is there are already selling well!!! The last thing they want to do is not be able to have enough supply to cover the all the increased demand that would be seen...and again, how much would the demand go up by going to $199?

If the console goes to $199, the average games / accessories addition would be less than $100. If you have to spend $299 just on the system, you'll have to spend $50 more just to get the game.

It just doesn't make economic sense to drop to $199 at this point.

<sigh>

One...more...time....

THEY MAKE THE REAL MONEY FROM THE GAMES!!!!!

Your example contradicts itself! You say that at the lower price, you would spend less than $100 on games and accessories, but if you paid $299 for the console, you'd still have to buy a game.

Uh...HELLO?!?!?

Do the math: What's the royalty on the ONE game you'd buy with the $299 console vs. the PROFIT they'll get when you run up $350 by buying a $199 console, a couple of $50 games, a 2nd controller and a memory card? Both ways, you spend $350, but in the 2nd example, they make a royalty on TWO games and the profit on the controller and card. Do you think they cost $30 to make? The tooling for the controller was recouped five years ago! It's like printing money now!

The less you pay for the base console means the more you'll have to buy MGS2, FFX and whatever else. Just as drug dealers give the "first hit free", by slashing the price, Sony's gonna hook a lot of addicts on PS2!

I dunno if this thread is populated by 15-year-olds, but it's clear that many posters understanding of economics is severely lacking. Educate yourselves!

As for price matching/protection, how many people REALLY do it? Just because the peeps here at ATF are constantly searching for deals, doesn't mean the general public does.

THIS DOESN"T MAKE ANY SENSE

A lot of stores have price protections and you can return for 30 days or so.

If someone buys a PS2 on December 24th and finds the price dropped to $199 on the 29th, can't they just come in to the store and ask for price difference? Would Sony do this right after Xmas (the time most consoles are sold)?

I doubt it, as the title says, the thread creator started the "rumoured" rumor

hear hear DefRef you are right. In order to gain more market power than those they already have, the can cut prices to gain more buyers--more buyers mean more game sales translated to more profits. And by this time with worldwide sales doing so well--they will be able to cut their consoles price since they should be able to manufacture the consolo in much efficient way thus reducing the cost. It is simply economics--people are buying consoles for their game support not because of the piece of hardware the consoles have inside and that's what make SONY PS1 a big success in the first place---choice of games!.

sure, in a perfect world the hardware would be free and they'd make all the money off of licensing. but remember if they drop the price $100 they have to not only sell more systems, they also have to increase the average number of titles bought per system.

So it doesn't matter if they sell 100,000 more or whatever...they have to increase the amount of software the average user buys.

You also don't understand the concept (NEED) of cash flow either...

Can't we accept that half the business decisions made in the market come from a magic eight ball? The other half have some rhyme & reason, not always rational to the consumer.

I was at Best Buy in Moorpark, CA last Saturday and bought some Crucial 256 DDR memory. They had the PS2 for $199 after $200 rebate. It came w/ a couple of games and some accessories. No joke!

I used to be a somewhat avid gamer, but it's been a few years since I had any interest in consoles. That is, until I've seen recent video game commercials. And the thing is nearly every game I've found myself drooling over is for the "old-tech" PS2. Almost nothing for the X-Box has made me say "wow", and the GameCube has some nice-looking games but nothing to entice me into buying the system.

I'm not an inventory manager for Best Buy, but I play one on TV, and I think...

Give me a break, until an announcement is made by Sony, it's all rumor and speculation. This isn't the place for it IMO.

One might consider spelling the word rumored correctly before posting a ridiculous rumor such as this. The need to contribute should be tempered by the ability to offer a true "hot deal".

Since its your first post I'll refrain from calling you a "know-it-all-moron". Rumour is a european variant for the word rumor and is a totally acceptable spelling. Just like "Armour" and "Armor" are both the same thing. So here's a tip. Don't "pretend" to be so smart because youre not impressing anyone.

My source is working tonight and will try and dig up some more info. If this pans out, I'll be expecting some apologies from y'all.

emonkey: You're correct. I don't know why, but I've always tended toward the Euro spellings of words - colour, theatre, grey. I dunno why, but at least you knew enough not to be a jerk about it.

If the price drops to $199, I would probably buy a PS2, even though I just bought an XBox. That would be low enough to make it cheap to invest in a new system. This makes perfect sense for Sony. It will attract people who weren't intending on purchasing a gaming system.

I'm hoping that its true just so it can be shoved in the faces of some of the board jerks that, for some reason, took personal offense to the "rumor".

But regardless, ANY drop in price would be a very smart move on the PS2. As said earlier, they make their money on games. So putting the PS2 and its library head to head with the GameCube would absolutely lock them in until the other 2 reach 2nd gen games. Anyway, there is enough room in the market for all 3 consoles so I hope some people can learn to chill out when it comes to talking about a system that they don't own.

DefRef,

Look you little sh!t face. U are pissing everybody off here. So why don't you just shut you yap.
No, I do not work for Sony. Maybe you work for Microsoft and want to devalue the PS2 by saying it will have a price drop of 1/3. Well guess what you crap aight gonna work. Cuz anybody with a half a brain will be buying the PS2 as shown on every statistic availible.

Why am i so pissed off, Simply because you are making this up with your "reliable source" bullcr@p.
How bout i tell you not to eat for 15 days because food will be cheaper on 12/29/2001.

Lets put it this way I would be real happy if the PS2 indeed is getting a price drop. But the fact is that is simply not true and i am sick of you BS. Thas is what angers me. I don't know what your motives are but you are trying very very hard to make people believe your trash.

And your the one with the lack of economics fanboy. If your so smart why don't you go buy 1,000,00 xboxs at $299 and sell them for $99. Maybe you will make some money. that is your way of thinking.

Please read everyones post idiot. If the PS2 is selling out in everystore and is selling better than the competition why would the want to lose opportunity cost.

Defref,

Stop with this nonsense, your source this your source that. Show the friggin proof. In 9 days everybody is gonna see what a big fat lier you are. Friggin Crybabie. Go change your diaper.

Well my friggin source says the m$ will be giving out xboxs and lose $400 per console in jan 2002 because they want to make money on the games, isn't that where the money is. So everyone shouldn't buy an xbox. its no big deal what do you have to lose if they don't give the xbox away in jan. we all can buy it then.

holidays returns are a big headache for retailers. You think sony will drop the price right after the holidays to make it crazy for the retailers? Please don't spread false rumors like these!!! Most electronics products see price drops during Presidents weekend in Feb when most come with new models. Feb is like a new model year for electronic products like August is to Automobiles.
