One...more...time....
THEY MAKE THE REAL MONEY FROM THE GAMES!!!!!
Your example contradicts itself! You say that at the lower price, you would spend less than $100 on games and accessories, but if you paid $299 for the console, you'd still have to buy a game.
Uh...HELLO?!?!?
Do the math: What's the royalty on the ONE game you'd buy with the $299 console vs. the PROFIT they'll get when you run up $350 by buying a $199 console, a couple of $50 games, a 2nd controller and a memory card? Both ways, you spend $350, but in the 2nd example, they make a royalty on TWO games and the profit on the controller and card. Do you think they cost $30 to make? The tooling for the controller was recouped five years ago! It's like printing money now!
The less you pay for the base console means the more you'll have to buy MGS2, FFX and whatever else. Just as drug dealers give the "first hit free", by slashing the price, Sony's gonna hook a lot of addicts on PS2!
I dunno if this thread is populated by 15-year-olds, but it's clear that many posters understanding of economics is severely lacking. Educate yourselves!
As for price matching/protection, how many people REALLY do it? Just because the peeps here at ATF are constantly searching for deals, doesn't mean the general public does.
