Indeed, these are very valid points, but who is to say that the PS3 won't be throttled back from previously established specs, if they need to release it earlier? Perhaps the PS3 will be made from chips that can be produced on current fab lines. Sony could release a "PS2.5" and still call it a PS3.

I haven't gotten into any of the Xbox vs. DC vs. PS2 arguments and haven't disagreed with the numerous posts that the timing seemed weird. I really can't believe that PS3 is coming out so soon either. I DON'T KNOW! I'm just passing along what I was told. If it happens, awesome! If it doesn't, so what? The thread title has a ton of question marks, but that still doesn't make some people happy. I'll change it to even more doubting language, just so the violent types here will f*cking CHILL!

Point taken. Sony hasn't announced specs for the PS3 yet (I think..) and they're not held to those specs come release date. Heck, maybe there'll be an Athlon in the PS3 to antagonize XBOX?

Ah well, I'll worry about getting a PS2 first.

Uh, I'd like to point out the BB ad for 12/26 has already been posted, with no mention at all for the PS2 being $199.

Guess that pretty much kills this rumor, since the source was from Best Buy and it was stated it would start 12/26.
