Ummmm. my 686 has no safety to turn on and off. Unless you could DA being 'safe'. I also keep my at the beside loaded up with nice JHP ammo.

The best safety is between your ears.
And congrats on your XD purchase. They are fine guns. Btw, I always keep my mags loaded. Unloaded mags and guns do me no good if I need to use them in a hurry.

Never carry a weapon safety off. Safety comes off when you are ready to use it.
That goes against carry best practices and why many/most don't have a manual saftey. It needs to be ready to fire with a pull of the trigger.
Ummm, many/most DO have a manual safety. It's just Glock and a few others that have recently abandoned them for other devices.
Ruger, Sig Sauer, Smith & Wesson, Beretta, and CZ just off the top of my head.
Depends on the model. Different choices for different people. My kahr doesn't have a safety, just a long double action only trigger. My 1911's have a safety and they're carried locked and cocked with safety on.
You are correct that these manufacturers have not entirely abandoned safeties, though the fact that they provide decocker-only models implies that they do not think safeties are a necessary feature of an autoloading pistol.

*shrug* I've been shooting my whole life, and so far only the Glock I owned had no safety. I realize there are others out there, I just have never seen one other than Glock. Must be an age thing, or regional thing, or preference thing, or something localized to my experiences.

I've been carrying a gun all my life and never carry with a safety on. To be fair, much of that time was spent carrying a Sig without a manual safety. But now I usually carry an H&K USP Compact. It has a safety\decocker, and I just carry it hammer down, safety off. I like to be able to pull the trigger and have the gun go bang. It's also why I never carry any of my 1911s, since the only safe way to carry them is cocked and locked.

You sound like one of those "jest shoot 'em with a shotgun, ya dont even gotta aim wit one o them" types.

For you, I'd recommend getting a dog. They are quite effective at scaring off would be robbers and they are far less likely to kill your children while you're giving them a bath.

I've got an XD-9 and it's a fine weapon. Never any malfunctions, though with the last box of bargain brand ammo i got a few stovepipes.... I keep it loaded, but no round in the chamber, same with my 12ga. Both are next to my bed.

My XDm 40 stays loaded with 16 rounds in the mag, one in the chamber, cocked (of course) and holstered with an extra mag next to it 24/7 at home. My USP 40 is also loaded up to max (13 rounds ni the mag, one in the chamber) hammer down and holstered. (Been tossing between engaging the safety and not based on mood and after reading up on how hard it really is to truly make swiping the safety off an instinctual action.) Spare mag also loaded and carried with the USP everywhere I go.

Never an issue with any of the mags, and I agree with a lot of the other posts in that a gun is worthless if not loaded. Although I don't keep my 10/22 loaded, nor my AR15 (but I do keep a few mags loaded for the AR.)

One thing to really strive for is to have plenty of spare mags, and rotate/test fire them routinely. I only have three mags for my USP due to supply issues right now, but have a dozen for the XDm and even more for the AR. Label them, and cycle through them if you want to be extra safe, but these days, any good factory mag is probably gonna outlast you. Or at least outlast the time before you decide on using a different boomstick for defense duty =)

Agreed. We just had another criminal shot trying to break into a home here in KY. Criminal's girl is now charged with complicity for being in the get away car, perp is dead. One shot to the chest as he tried to break in, dead at the scene.

Keep yours ready to fire.

Homeowner not charged.

for all you guys complaining about the mag vs. clip thing, I've been reading The Dark Tower series by Stephen King and he calls a pistol magazine a clip...
