Never carry a weapon safety off. Safety comes off when you are ready to use it.

That goes against carry best practices and why many/most don't have a manual saftey. It needs to be ready to fire with a pull of the trigger.

They've pulled loaded magazines from WWII and fired them with no problems, been sitting 50 years.

Constant compression doesn't wear out springs, the compression/decompression does.

And if you can afford the amount of ammo it would take to wear out a mag, you can afford a new one

Agreed. You cause more wear by cycling the spring than by leaving it compressed.

YEAH FUCKING ONE SHOT HEADSHOTS!

BOOM!

clips aren't expensive, rotate them out if you are worried.

This is not the case with modern clips.

*waiting for someone to chime in about magazines*

ive had a p89 for years as well, i keep 3 full mags with me all the time. i dont carry with safety off tho, thats just plain silly.

the p89 is double action so with the safety off is just like a revolver,it's not as unsafe as it sounds.

You bought a girly gun for home defense? Sounds more like you plan on carrying it with you where ever you go, w/o a CCW permit. I mean if you wanna scare off the crooks, shouldn't you have bought a pump action shotgun instead? But whatever, you must be one of those people who think they can hit a dime from 100 yards away.

I keep my S&W 686 loaded, bedside. safety is always off . My BPS and AR are downstairs in the gun cabinet. Don't keep anything downstairs loaded. Not to worried about break-ins, small town FTW.

Finally picked up my XD-40 last night. My main use for the gun is for home defense. I have heard conflicting things about keeping the clips loaded at all times. I heard that if you keep them loaded for too long that the springs will wear out and the gun may malfunction. What does ATOT do? Should I keep a clip with only 5/6 rounds in it so as to not wear out the springs? I thought of that, but it kind of defeats the purpose of a 12 round clip...

Great gun.

I rotate my clips, keep one fully loaded and then rotate the bullets to another clip routinely.

Mind if I ask how often you do this?

Once a month.

The rate I can shoot my pistol is a bit quicker then the rate I can shoot a shotgun.

I can easily hit a dime a hundred yards away... provided there are enough dimes to cover a barn side.

Keeping a magazine loaded will in no way, shape or form wear out the spring. Repeated use of the spring will wear it out though.

I keep all of my mags for every firearm loaded and ready. An unloaded magazine is useless if you need it.

An XD-40 is a girly gun?

Evidently Baked has never shot one. It has a nice kick to it...

In case you missed my earlier post, or Unheard's multiple posts...

a CLIP is ammo that is physically clipped together, like the ammo used in a M1 Garand in WWII
a MAGAZINE is the proper term for what OP's gun and most firearms use

Please, think of the kittens.

Best home defense weapon is a 12 gauge.

My CC instructor also recommended that I use #8 bird shot so I don't kill the neighbors if the shot accidentally goes through the walls of my house to next door. Which is smart I was keeping it loaded with 00.

You CC instructor is a dumbass ignorant retarded fuckface if he told you to use #8 birdshot for home defense.

that's like shooting sand at someone practically the pellets are so tiny, better hope you hit him in the eyes and blind him.

use #4 buckshot, it's 27 pellets and a good home defense round, and you don't have to worry about 00 buck going through multiple walls in you house and multiple walls of your neighbors and killing them either, so that's a dumbass fucking statement too.

You do need to slightly worry if your house is loaded with children though as it'll pass through sheetrock pretty easily.

I wasnt going to keep the gun loaded, just the clip
Whatcha shootin', a Garand?

I keep 14 rounds in my Glock 19 mag at all times. The loaded mag and gun will always be separated in my house, unless I need to protect myself.

I've heard this too. Small buckshot (#4) or really big birdshot (BB) ought to be a good compromise.

Oh and personally I keep a mag loaded with Speer Gold Dots in my pistol but no round is chambered and the trigger is in the pulled-back position so I don't forget to rack the slide if I need it. The other two mags I have stay loaded with FMJ range ammo because I was too cheap to buy enough hollow points for all of them. If/when I get a carry permit, I'll probably get more hollow points.

The only thing you MIGHT get benefit from at first is by downloading the magazine by 1 round. You'll find that putting that last round in the mag is likely quite difficult. Now slam that magazine home with the slide closed. Takes a bit of extra effort, no? Pop one round out and see how much easier it seats. On a defense firearm, I download the magazine just 1 round.
