To love or be loved?

Hello folks,

Seeing many YAGT floating around, it made me think of something. I had a discussion with a female friend this summer about what is best between to love someone and being loved by someone. What do you think is best and why?

I know, in a Brave New World, both person should love the other equally, but we're not living in an utopia.

Enjoy the discussion!

To be loved,

If you love someone you give everything of yourself to them, if you get nothing in return you will leave yourself empty.

to be loved, but to reciprocate that is pretty cool too.

Rarely does this work out though, despite all of the people out there who claim to be in love. I believe over half of them are just lying to themselves and don't fully understand the "putting your life on the line for this person" love that they think they're in.

to love.
There is no better feeling than to know you are giving something to true and pure as love. NO matter what the "kind" of love.

i don't understand how you could love someone who didn't love you.

imo, you *can't* feel love for someone who doesn't love you.

I agree, I think it would be more like infatuation than love if that person didn't love you back.

To love: because wanting to be loved without the requirement to reciprocate is selfish while loving others no matter what reveals one's true nature and the one being loved's nature.

NOTE: Jesus died for us not because we will love him in return, but that he loves us.

To love, when the person who loves you is gone, you feel empty, alone

Or maybe that was because you loved them..

 for an almost depressing subject

Lola, we all know that your life is perfect and so is your wonderful relationship. But 95-99.9% of us (and the rest of the world) are NOT in is boat. So for the sake of the rest of us, would you PLEASE stop reminding us it everyone of it.

You have the power to change from "To be loved" to "To love" going the other way is a lot harder. Also it hurts to love someone and not have it be reciprocated, not to mention it could get annoying for the other person if they really don't appreciate it.

That was rather rude... even if it was a joke. My relationships are not perfect and most of the time need work...
BUT this was saying from ME.. I would rather LOVE than BE loved. I am saying i would rather LOVE my mom, dad, brother... NOT only a spouse.
Perhaps you feel that way because of your personal views and non-positive outlook.
I have a right to post whatever i chose on this public message board. I truly am sorry if i offended you in any way, but i have made a very noticable choice in my life. I promise myself to be and stay postitive as much as i can. Always looking for good in each person and situation. Sorry if my outlook annoys you.

Tis better to give than receive.

IMO, that applies to love as well. I would hate to not be loved but by giving love and seeing how happy it makes someone, is very fulfilling.

I don't know, but it usually ends in a restraining order.

We're in the minority, but I would agree with you on this.

I'm sure some will say how depressing it is to love without reciprocation, but I don't see it that way at all. It's even more depressing to be in a situation where someone loves you, but you don't feel the same way. To Love is more powerful IMO.
