I can either buy a 3000+ athlon 64 and OCZ EB pc3700 RAM, and OC it to 3400, or find some cheaper RAM, and buy a athlon 64 3400+...

What do you guys think? If i can find GOOD ram for about 200-240 bucks, i can get a 3400+ newcastle (clawhammer is too much).

P.S. In 3400s clawhammers have 200 less mhz than the newcastles but 512k more cache, right? Just like the 3200s?

Im kinda stuck on this lol.

Absolutely overclock.

Done in moderation harm or damage to the componets is minimal, even non exisitant.

Come here and you will have tons to walk you through if your new..

pretty sure?

SOmone told me all socket 754 chips above 3000+s are just 3000+s OCd....thats why im wondering. If not, i might as well spend a bit less on RAM, more on a CPU, and it'd even out but be more stable and cooler...right?

Ok, another few qs. OCing wont shorten the 'lives' of my parts, will it? If i wanna OC, do you think i should get another HSF, and just not get the retaul 3000+? Any reccomendations if so?

Overclocking is no longer a cheap, convenient way to get more juice out of your computer.

It's becoming to be a very expensive hobby.

Yeah , i agree overclocking is minimal risk. Why spend extra cash for a couple hundred Mhz..

definitely overclock, the only way it will shorten the life span of your cpu is if you don't properly cool it or go over board with the voltage.

ok what RAM should i get if i get a 3400?

And its possible to get a 3000+ to over 3400+ speeds, if i do OC, right? I think that'd require an extra HSF though. Because the thing is, if im gonna get to 3400+ with a 3000, and itd cost the same to just buy a 3400, why not do that, ya know?

That's a broad statement. I wouldn't call mobile bartons expensive to oc...

you could probably use a better HSF, im on the stock fan and im at 2.475. get pc3500 if u want an easier overclock but you can get pc3200 like i did and im past 3400 speeds

the 3400 is $112 more than the 3000

So if you got past 3400 speeds with a pc3200 RAM, with EB 3700 i should be pretty good to go...that i would not mind, not one bit, but im scared that a)it wont work b)it will, but its gonna get really hot and i'll need to buy a HSF. I dunno though...
