duckers, spec is 18" for any 2 drive IDE cable. that's 12 inches for the controller and first iDE connector, and 6 more between the first and second.
of course, 36" and 24" cables work fine... I have 24" 80\40 cables now.
Hmm, I run ATA66 drives on Abit/Highpoint controllers on my BE6 mobo. Before cutting them when loading the Highpoint drivers screen it detected the drives as UDMA4. I After cutting them (down to the 6" sections) they now report as UDMA2.
Perhaps it twasn't such a good idea....damn, wish I had some hard drive benchmarks saved from before.
With my 50 wire SCSI cables I just cut them ever 5 wires then stack them on top of each other. In my opinion it looks neater. Shame you cant do it to U2W cables as they are causing me problems.
As for cutting SCSI, Hell, I've built my own SCSI cables before, cutting them off at a connector isn't a problem, just don't leave any copper hanging out.
The speed of electricity or electron drift velocity is actually not fast at all. It seems fast because all of the electrons move at once giving you an instant reaction. IT is analogous to a 50 ft. garden hose. If the hose is empty it takes some time for the water to get from one end to another when you first turn the water on. If the hose is full, as soon as you turn it on, water comes out the other end.
