To probe, or not to probe. That IS the question.

Does anyone know of good port scanner/share scanner? I have used Legion in the past. I'm looking for one that is fast.

Ummmmm, this is for testing my network security.

No, seriously, it is for my company network. I've been put in charge of security/re-organization of our internal networks. The last line was sarcasim, which is hard to convey on a typed message forum.

You're in charge of security and can't find a good port scanner on your own?

LOL soybomb.

Actually port scanning was deemed perfectly legal by a federal court case last year. I forget who was involved, but it was determined that scanning was not computer fraud.

I use them at work all the time to make sure I've set up my filter correctly. I use AutoNOC....it may not be the best for what you're doing though.

GRC.com
vulnerabilities.org (sp?)

Good sites that probe for you, but they also have links for additional info.

If port scanning were illegal, some of us could not adequately serve our clients. It is part and parcel for verifying network security.

I use a couple of excellent scanners, but I'm not going to be passing them on to some newbie who may, or may not, need them for legitimate purposes.

My system is a NT environment.

Yes, I use them all the time too, for work and for my own interest sake. I was just getting an AT opinion to see if there are any better ones out there then what I am using. Grim looks to be pretty cool though.

Another question; is it possible to detect a computers presence in your domain if that computers server service is shutdown? You should be able to somehow because that computer can still pull stuff off of other PC's but it's invisible to others...
