Well, good luck to OP, but I win?

I just lost it yesterday and completely gave up today: printed out my resignation letter the second I got to work and turned it in a bit later after talking to some work friends.

Bank accounts will be staying still, but I'll be fine. Sometimes you've just had enough.

CONGRATULATIONS! Envious myself, and my wife said that I could quit whenever I'd like... But I'm playing it cool at work - coming in early, nodding my head at their bullshit and just trying to stay off of the asshole's radar until I get word from my school applications. I'll quit a month before school starts, and am socking away some cash while I b.s. my way through the job I hate.

But I like what you did, sometimes you just gotta cut the cord and move on

If you can save money and afford to quit, then go ahead. If not, I'd definitely recommend finding a new job before you quit!

I would quit if I were you, NO one should be put up with that kinda stress.
Recently submitted my letter and suddenly my stress feels alot lighter already since I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

You will too! just make the choice.

I bs'd and put up with shit for 4 years, I put up with the absolute worst for the last 2. Recent policy change from upper management also forced everyone to come to work during "core" hours -- it had previously been very flexible as long as you got shit done. Meanwhile, the city I'm in has gotten more and more congested, so a 50 minute commute during peak hours turned into 1.5 hours -- it took 1 hour and 50 minutes today. Left 40 minutes early, got here exact same time as usual. I could move closer, but there's no room for advancement and I've been wanting to leave for years.

Add to that the new manager I've had for the past few months. Piss poor social skills (e.g. regularly starts small talk then walks away as I start answering, when I resigned he had virtually nothing to say) and English is his second or third language.

Meh. She's probably making several hundred thousand dollars a year if she's running a dispensary and she seems like she's running it because she believes in it rather than just the money.

hopefully you learned a lesson from all of this - never let it get that bad.

when people do what you did, i don't understand why they could put themselves through the months/years that lead up to the decision to just get up and walk out. obviously you knew it was terrible for a very long time but did nothing about it. maybe next time you won't put yourself through being unhappy for so long before just breaking and quitting on the spot.

EDIT:

wow just read you were there for 4 years before you did anything about it. i think it's pretty stupid that you would be in that position for 4 years being unhappy. you should have done something about 3.9 years ago.

If you feel so unhappy and stressful with this job, quit it. There are a bunch of good jobs that are waiting for you, man

Not arguing with any of that. It was dumb. One thing to note: I'm still there because I gave a "proper" 2 weeks notice.

This is what happens when you have low confidence, your job treats you like you ain't got no learnin', family brings you down any chance it gets, and the job market is shit -- I'm in Canada, we're still hemorrhaging full-time jobs. On to the next one...

Edit: Oh, and I was there for closer to 5.5 years. The first year was somewhat manageable.

Don't feel dumb, feel finally liberated. My dad was an angry, bitter guy at his job for over 30 years. The job market, self esteem, and just fear will mess with you. At least you got off of that cycle before it was too late.

I completely empathize with being too scared without enough confidence, kudos for eventually manning up!

Next time he pisses you off in a meeting. Go to him in private and tell him you haven't had a raise in X years. Tell him you want a 20% raise or you walk.

I am pretty sure I've never quit a job. I did have a temp US Govt job for 3 months, a 3 month extension, they lobbied me pretty heavily to stay on (i.e. morph it into a "permanent" job) but I hated it, had been saving every penny and when the 2nd stint of the temporary job was over, I was gone and executing my plan to seek a job in the private sector. That didn't go as planned, though.

Thing is, whenever I have had a job I hated (many!), I pretty much saved every penny I could because nothing that was discretionary that I could buy seemed worth what I was going through to make the money. Mostly those were temp jobs. Eventually I developed a career in programming and I pretty much loved that compared to where I'd been. It's a dream to have head hunters calling you after you've beaten down the doors of the temps for years in order to get shit jobs so you can pay the rent and buy cheap groceries.

While I agree with everyone saying, find a new job and quit.

One thing you haven't mention is, how passionate are you about the non-profit or the rest of the people you work with? Does this COO have ultimate say? Could you document his behavior and go to HR? If you don't care about the company/non-profit/cause, screw it. Do whatever else recommends.

Honestly, it's an artistic mission (music) and I thought it would resonate more than it really does. I don't see anything positive actually being done, so I'm beyond apathetic. The COO is our HR lead, he'd be the only person to complain to.

As for the people who work here, it's a very strange vibe. I'm the only brown guy here and, race isn't an issue to me (my wife's of the Caucasian persuasion) but I do feel a bit spoken down to by most of the staff. Not in a overtly hurtful way, but the way someone would speak to their English is their 2nd language recent immigrant neighbor. It's a weird vibe, I don't think a single person would notice that I'm missing .. Until they need toner...

UPDATE

Now this is fun. Walked in today to our file server being down. Turns out, even with norton up to date, we got hit with ransomware that encrytped all files on our server. I'm guessing 8+ hours to recovery, if at all...

I'm guessing now's the day to walk..

Sounds like the entire IT department should be fired.

This is why companies outsource.

Yeah, I was close to punching him when he showed absolutely no regard for my personal life (I offered to come in as early as possible, but I can't make daycare open earlier) when other coworkers have every friday off (err "work from home") to take care of their kids. I wasn't even asking for a concession, just stating that I simply did not have the lead time to make proper arrangements. He's a massive brat

Where is HR in all this??? D:
