I'd just straight up tell him, look, you're a piece of shit, I quit, deal with it yourself, you don't pay me half as much as i'd need to keep putting up with it.

I thought about that, having a shouting match and leaving - but in his fucked up/ignorant head he'd think I was projecting -he'd think that I fucked up and was taking it out on the world and storming off, like a brat. I figured just disappearing would be classier, and more fun

Yeah shouting match wouldn't have been good, I would do it over text or email personally, but your option seems to be working decently so far!

Yeah I think this is probably the best way to handle it, though I'd probably keep the texts and read them for lulz.

I may frame the text messages!

I'm trying to be mature and non-vindictive about this all - it was my decision based on their actions and being an awful fit for that work environment. I don't want to be petty, but I don't envy them at all right now! I'm sure he's very red faced and sweaty right now.

Let's see....

Company's servers get totally and absolutely f'd up, possibly beyond repair. Malcontent IT employee quits without notice the same day.

If there's not a criminal investigation, I'll be surprised. I hope you can afford a good lawyer. Highly recommend that you don't ignore the knocking on your front door that will follow in a couple of days, unless you want to be flushed out of your home by a SWAT team.

Indeed. after some research it was obvious that id get the blame, all the stress, all the working after hours until this is resolved with zippo benefit to my bottom line or self respect.

Two weeks ago someone stole a laptop while I was out sick. I went through a monumental amount of work tracking the laptop down and didon't get a thank you, I was put on probation for 90 days with a threat of termination of it happens again. For someone else stealing a laptop

Well if you are the IT department, IT assets are your responsibility as is your servers getting viruses.

You probably should have let them know you cannot handle the responsibility on your own.

Instead you ran from it. This is something they can mention to those that call in about a reference. They can ask if you gave a two week notice and be told no and he walked out when the servers went down...both are totally factual and objective.

The problem is the way he stated it:
Now this is fun. Walked in today to our file server being down. Turns out, even with norton up to date, we got hit with ransomware that encrytped all files on our server. I'm guessing 8+ hours to recovery, if at all...

I'm guessing now's the day to walk..

They could easily turn that into him being the culprit and organizing this doing a *blink blink* *wink wink* thing online.

Personally, I'd delete this thread because of potential liability of a company being down for what may be several days. They will be looking for someone to compensate them.

You're talking from the standpoint that there was an enforceable contract in place to force 2 week notices. I didn't sign one if the company wasn't willing to give me a like document that no matter what the reasons were for termination I would get 2 weeks notice, paid regardless of their decision to require me to work during that time, their discretion. They weren't keen on signing that.

Put me on the stand and I'll prove my innocence through ignorance. I never heard of crytowall until today, and by walking I will be losing my entire paycheck for this pay periods, much more than the $500 ransom the crytothing's asking for. Bah, they have an it consultant, he's just going to bill them up the nose for a week and then they'll hire a 20 year old at half of what they used to pay me, I doubt they're shedding a tear right now (just probably flustered). They can load the backup and be on their way

It's a matter of walking out of a job your are responsible for in a crisis due to your own negligence.

Good luck trying to defend negligence through the *blink blink* act.

Courts have seen this before.

If they have a good backup, why would you say they couldn't recover from this.

Sounds like a story now or you really didn't understand your job.

Also they have to pay you. You should know this.

If they don't find that you caused (or allowed) this incident to happen, it could be the best thing that could have happened for them, if it got you to finally quit. Sounds like your boss has been trying to get the same results for quite some time, with little success. In fact, maybe the boss had something to do with the infection. Damnit... that's pure genius.

Prove Negligence. A help desk monkey can show that with encryptor viruses that picky apps + share that requires write permissions = crypto'd. There's absolute 0 you can do about it other than to educate your users not to click on unknown things, which is user negligence. You're just showing how much of your life is a blown up lie, you don't even understand IT.

We can demo it if you like. I'll be a high access user, assistant to the vice CEO hows that? I'll require AppData for an old Juris program, so you can't lock down write access to that. I require write and modify access to all departmental shares. For efficiency I need direct modify access to several file transfer folders on our webserver. Local admin permissions are required for DCRM.

Can you make that un "oopsable" and unencryptable?

U mad and like I said your make believe sandbox isn't what happened.

Are you help desk, lol!

Sorry man, it may work on the disney forums you frequent, but saying "u mad" repeatedly on the internet doesn't actually equal any truth. You're more than free to get scientific evidence that I'm mad, but you'll probably be trying for awhile, maybe the next time someone runs through an intersection on a red.

As to what happened, my "sandbox" is just as realistic as the little picture you're painting in your head that leads him to negligence.

My job and credentials are very public, including photos of my hands on work and research. It's literally like 30 seconds of googling, it's all available on my profile, several members here have done it.

When your immature nature instantly replies with "You're just showing how much of your life is a blown up lie, you don't even understand IT"; no one will listen to you further as it shows you are being irrational and angry.

Wishing me death in an intersection on top of it? You are off your rocker.

Capeche?

Whatever you want to believe. You know your standing with the community, I know mine. I'm innocent until proven guilty, as our system was founded on, you're guilty until proven innocent, a totalitarian system to which we're headed. My statements are based on a large team of people and their weekly situations.

OP, I'm glad you got out of that caustic relationship. It's clear your work place was going to continue to use and abuse, and sometimes these people need dropped on their heads for a reality check. Soldier on!

Presumption of innocence is not part of a civil court which this would probably end up.

Glad you have everything figured out.
