Especially to those who have owned their Samsung monitor more than a year, what do you think of it today? I'm presently evaluating a SyncMaster 950p, and would obviously like to hear from owners of that model in particular.

Thanks.

I don't have that model but I love my Samsung. I bought a 753DF in a Hot Deals forum deal from Dell for $100. Granted I was upgrading from a 4 year old Compaq which couldnt handle anything over 65 hz, so this of course looks stunning. Either way, I really like it. Flat screen (not flat panel) makes it look really sharp.

I've had my 950P for nearly a year. Its definately my favorite of all of my computer hardware. Picture is very crisp and clear.

I have a 950P and it is a great monitor IMO. It doesn't have a perfectly flat screen like the df models do, but I think the linearity is better. I bought my mother the 19 inch df model and you could see curvature on the edges that I was not able to fix 100% using the monitor's controls. My 950P has a little more glare than the df model, but I think it is a better monitor overall and would not hesitate to buy one again,...especially since Samsung monitors are priced so well for the quality you get...
Hope this helps.

Thanks. I'm curious, do you have to have your contrast up full and brightness down to zero? This is one of the oddities I find with this monitor (that, and the vertical focus seems to have no effect, and horizontal focus only seems to focus the r/l sides not centre). So far, it seems, everyone likes their Samsung.

Ive got a 1 year old 900NF, a 6 month old 700NF and a 3 day old 700NF.

All of them are wonderful.

hagbard,
I haven't used the controls for brightness or contrast. I actually cannot find any using the controls on the monitor. The monitor came with a program that I used when I first set the computer up that allowed me to set the colors. I actually have reformatted my harddrive since then and no longer use that program as the "out of the box" (so to speak) settings seem fine to me. The only controls I have used were those that set the size of the picture, its positioning, and shape. As far as brightness and contrast, my 950p monitor is definitely bright and crisp with good contrast and black levels. Text is easy to read and pictures look great. I'm happy I didn't spend another $150+ on a Trinitron (bought this monitor 1.5 years ago and prices for Trinitrons were substantially more....don't know if they still are....). Anyway, hope this helps.

I own a 950p as well, although I've only had it for a few months. I like it a lot, but I do have a few small complaints (may just be my particular monitor):

1: Geometry is way off when you get to the edges of the screen; to the point where it can't be completely "adjusted away". The top bows down, the right side curves in slightly from top to bottom, and the very bottom of the picture isn't quite level. That said, the rest of the picture seems fine.

2: I've noticed the brightness/contrast thing myself, although mine seems to be the opposite: I've got the brightness cranked all the way down, and the contrast set somewhere in the middle. On top of that, I have to push the brightness down further from within my video card controls - I swear, you could use this thing for a spotlight! That makes it good for office work and web surfing, but I have to go back into the vc controls to bring the brightness back to normal if I want to play any games. Otherwise everything is almost black.

3. Unless the focus is set just right, I get these weirdo-looking bands across the screen - looks like the colorbanding you'd see when you play a game in 16bit, except that the bands aren't straight, they form waves across the screen.

When all is said and done, I guess I should've sent it back for a replacement when I saw all of this stuff. I cured everything but the geometry though, and I do like it. Besides, how much can you expect for $160? (got it through a dell deal over the summer)

Maximus: The brightness and Contrast controls are two little dials set beneath the face of the monitor, to the right of the little pop-out panel.

NTB,
Oh, I see them now...lol. Thanks. My contrast was all the way up and my brightness was almost all the way up. I like it that way. I can't play games on my computer b/c of AGP instability inherent in my motherboard. I've got a new mb on the way. Maybe then I'll have to use these controls. Good thing you let me know about them....hehe... thanks!

I've had a 950P for about 4 months so far and am content with it. The convergence is off a bit in one corner, and I can't get the brightness set low enough with the dial, but otherwise it's OK. NTB, it sounds like you are describing a moire pattern, the is an adjustable setting for this.

900NF here. Haven't had it for a year, but almost. I like it a lot. It's not the best monitor I have ever seen, but one of the best. A roomate of mine has the 950p and has had it for over a year and loves it!

Tried setting my contrast to the middle, kind of dark and tan looking. I have the colortemp set to 6500k. One of the reasons I posted was I was concerned that over time, the monitor would loose "real" brightness (ie: contrast) given that contrast is already all the way up.

Oops, wrong name. I knew there was an adjustment for it though; after all, I did get rid of it But this monitor is pretty picky about it: set the controls too far to one end and lines show up on one side; set it too far to the other, and the lines will disappear from one side and reappear on the other. Fortunately, I've got all the resolutions that I use set correctly now, and the monitor remembers what those settings are. So I'm in good shape.

I've had a 900IFT for nearly two years now, and I haven't had to touch the controls once. It's simply rock steady every day. It doesn't do the grow thing that I see many monitors do, where the image size expands as it warms up. I'd purchase another Samsung monitor in a heartbeat. In fact, I need to pick up a 17" to send w/ my daughter next year and the 753DF will be at the top of the list.

I've had my 900NF now for about a year and a half now with NO problems. I owned a Syncmaster 17GLsi before this and that monitor gave me zero problems also....and I purchased that one refurbished. I also had a Syncmaster 15GLi before the 17GLsi and that also gave me no problems and THAT was also purchased refurbished. Samsung monitors have been good to me new or refurbished. I also have a 900p in the other room and that monitor also has given me no problems and is still crisp and sharp.....had that for about almost 3 years now I think.

CNET editor's choice

Cnet has reviews on 19" monitors and compares/rates them. The monitors they recommend are pretty high end models so you'll pay for what you get.

May I remind you of good refresh rates at only 1280 x 1024 resolution, a large dot pitch of 0.26, and that the 950p is a discontinued model.

I'd just like you to at least consider a higher quality 17" model or the Syncmaster 900NF.

I checked CNET early on. Its taken me months to decide on a monitor, and I've heard lots of good things about the 950p, and at $369CDN and a $50 rebate, I found it hard to resist. I've got a few days left to decide, but there's not really much to choose from around here (Victoria, BC).
