A friend of mine used to be an instructor and now is a promoter for a ski/snowboard shop. I've asked him this very question as my wife skis and my only experience has been a single snowboarding trip.

He says if you've never been before, it's easiest to get decent on skis. If you want to get really really good, it's easier to snowboard.

I've only done skiing but it wasn't difficult to learn. I seem to notice more people struggling with snowboarding on the slopes. I also surf so maybe it wouldn't be as difficult for me.

I love skiing.

skiing is a lot of fun AND easier.....however, I would suggest snowboarding. I've only skiied and loved it, but everytime I go, I'm jealous of snowboarders. its just inherently "cooler"

I've never skiied before and only been on a board once. I picked it up pretty quickly (I was going down the easier hill after about an hour of practice on the bunny slope). I was still falling by the end of the day (fell only once on my last time down), but if I had been given another run or two, I would probably have made it down at least once without falling

From the posts above, it looks like snowboarders are generally people who can't spell and skiers are people who can spell. Judging by your original post, you look like you fit more in with the spellers than the "can't spellers."

Thus, simply by reading your post, I suspect that you would be better off skiing.

HAVE FUN!!!

 So you're saying skiing would better "suite" him?

Neither. Get a Snowmobile. 10x the fun of both snowboarding and skiing.

Let's see those guys go uphill without a lift

skiing is easier to learn, because you're pointed forwards, not sideways.

For me, boarding is definitely more fun. It does take its toll on you the first time around, but if you do decide on going boarding, make sure when you fall (as crazy as this may sound) put your arms across your chest and land on your butt. Even when you think you're going to fall face forward, twist your body so you land on your side. The last thing you want is for your wrists to go out. Not being able to stand up because the pain of the pressure on your wrists ... well it sucks.

Don't do that falling leaf crap. Go to Green / Blue and force yourself down. You'll learn faster... or was it die faster... I don't remember. Let me know how it turns out

Okay this is a perfect topic for me since I just went skiing for the first time 2 weeks again at Wintergreen, VA. I was going with an expert skiier and my mom. She never got further than 30 feet lol. The video I have of her on the ground is hilarious, I can post it if you guys want to see it. Anyways I decided to ski, since my friend Bret was teaching me. I dont know if me playing hockey for 12 years helped but within an hour we were racing down the slopes and I was stopping like you would in ice hockey. After lots of drinking beer on the lifts and shots at the bar I totally forgot how to ski lol. But it was so much fun we went back the next day, and actually I am going back again with my own equipment in 3 weeks. But I would say ski first, its easier to catch on but harder to perfect. Snowboarding is harder at first but easier to learn all the cool stuff from what I hear. If you notice your skis cominf off a lot have them tighten your dims or whatever they are called.

My folks used to live at Wintergreen. That place bugged me - very short runs, man-made snow, really expensive. If I'm paying $50 for a lift ticket, I don't want to ski the longest, hardest run they have in 5-7 minutes and then sit on the lift again for 10. But hey - you're on the east coast, so you take what you can get. This post doesn't really have anything to do with picking skiing over snowboarding (never tried the latter) - I just wanted to bitch about Wintergreen.

Snowboarding is a ton of fun. It's harder, but if you get it right, it's more rewarding. Plus you don't have to go as fast as you do on skis to have a lot of fun, and your legs are fixed in place, so while you fall more often, the consequences of the falls are generally lower than in skiing.

I've found snowboarding more fun. But if your whole family skis, you may want to do that first. If you don't like it, you can always learn to snowboard with your friends.

I've found skiing to be more difficult to master than snowboarding. I had a horrid time snowboarding the first two times I went, however. Then I took snowboarding lessons and have since enjoyed it fully.

Either snowsport you end up with, take lessons and always start on the nursery slopes! ^_^

isn't that like saying don't learn to surf if the ocean is wet?

No, theres icy condition and theres powdery condition.
When you fall on your @ss in icy condition trying to snowboarding is quite painful.

I had never ski or snowbaord in my life.
Learned to ski after 2 runs.
Learn to snowboard after like 2 weeks.
For ski nooBs, pizza mean stop, french fry means GO !!

Yeah, icy conditions are horrible for snowboarding or skiing. You want packed powder snow, not icy slopes.

I remember when i first tried to snowboard, figured it would similar to skateboarding... fat chance!
Skiing is easier but you'll stuck at the bunny slope all day, remember the bunny slope is marked with a double black diamond
