I know that we are a capitalistic society and everyone deserves every dime that they earn. However, pure capitalism without charity does not foster a healthy social system because mentally ill people need more attention than they're given. I feel that a 1% tax on people earning over $1MM in income is worth having less people in jails/shelters for simply being mentally ill and into programs that can help them learn and cope with their disability.

If thats how you feel, give them your money, not mine.

I already do. I hate to be hogging all the fun, so I voted accordingly

It's not charity when you're forcing people to hand it over, is it? My contention is not the percentage of the tax or the income at which it applies. It's about fairness. Would you have voted for it if you had to pay 1% of your income for it, regardless of your income level?

Prop 71 is a bond measure that everyone pays and benefits equally. Prop 63 is legalized robbery.

Prop 68 and 70 are legalized robbery for he Indians and thier Casinos. What's with this 99 year ban to not lift taxes on their casinos?

LOL! Give me a break!

No one wants to answer this question? I'd really like to know how the average joe in Kalifornia will be benefiting from this increase in taxes and what measures are in place to insure that this is not just free, and largely unaccountable, R&D funding for institutes and biotech companies.

Don't get me wrong... I'm all for stem cell research, but I'm not too keen on the idea of research funded by taxpayers that will ultimately be for the benefit of some company's bottom line, rather than the taxpayer who doled out the cash.

Since the $ goes towards getting help to those in need, I would pay 1% of my income towards it. Therefore, with only millionaires being taxed, I gladly voted for the measure. Keep in mind that "People with incomes over $1 million would pay an additional 1% tax on the part of their income above $1 million". I know that it might not seem fair, but people who have grown rich off this society should give some back to help those who are struggling.

Your federal tax dollars already fund research in the academic and institutional sectors, that is ultimately picked up by biotechs and pharms for sale and profit. As far as California having to pay for it, I agree it's unfair, but little is better than nothing. Other countries like France nationally fund embryonic stem cell research, I for one prefers the patents issued HERE in the US instead of having to pay whatever some other country charges for the benifits of the commitment.

Prop 63 was a 1% tax on taxable personal incomes of one million or more, the money is to go to mental health services. It is even deductible from federal taxes.

hmm. Well, if it's deductible from federal taxes, then where's the harm?

I voted yes on 71 and 63.
My sis is a psychologist, so voting yes on 63 will just shift the wealthy people's money to my sister

You'rr fvcking insane. I voted no on anything that would increase taxes (ie anything that required funding). Yes, I am a hardcore conservative in some areas.

At the very least I strongly believe we shouldn't be paying 6 billion to fund stem cell research.
