Are they really "refurbished" and "like new" or is that just bs? I'm mainly talking about brightness or screen burn in (taskbar is a good example). I am thinking of picking up a refurb since nobody sells good CRTs anymore unless they are $600+, which is out of my range. I was looking at Azatek and they don't look too bad, but I'm always curious about refurbs, and if they actually do any work on them, or if they just turn around and sell them.

Ive heard its like playing the lottery. It could be fine, or it could be really messed up. But thats just what I have heard.

I have a refurb IBM P260 (21" Trinitron) and it's just as good, if not better than my old 17" Sony Trinitron.

I think screen burn is just a myth these days. My 22" NEC FE1250+ seems to be in good condition, but I haven't been able to compare it to anything since my old monitor died. It looks really nice. Mine was made in October 2001 and had 20,000 hours on it when I got it (it has an internal clock). Sure, it's in good condition now, but I hope it lasts a a long time.

I have two CRTs sitting on my desk. One is 3 years old, one is 2 months. The older one is much dimmer and does not appear as sharp.

So, there may not be burn, but the quality degrades over time.

A lottery seems like a pretty good comparison to me. Samsung once sent me a refurbrished CRT as a warranty replacement. The replacement ended up dying in like a week. I sent it back and they sent a 2rd refurbrished model. That one has been going strong for a good 4 years now, and still looks great.

Screen burn it is not a myth. Both of my Sony Trinitron monitors (G400 and G220) have the taskbar burned in, and it's very visible on pure white screens. I can also make out the "My Computer" icon along with some other minor things.

I'm really looking hard with both black and white screens and can't see a hint of them.

I have purchased several Mitsubishi CRT's from Azatek. The last 2, a 19" & 22" Diamond Pro2040 were absolutely like new.

NEC & Mitsubishi are same ownership, so I guessing either should be fine. Personally, I like to ones with USB port cause you can make all adjustments via mouse. I set refresh rate at 100. Not a problem with Mitsubishi.

My old IBM 23" stopped working a month after my dad bought it, but he had a friend who fixes computer moniters and told us it would be $50 and 3 days to repair it. Its been going stong ever since (8 years). So the moral of the story is become friends with a computer monitor repair man.
