I always carry about $100 cash on me, and make most of minor day-to-day purchases in cash. I have no trouble keeping track of it, and find it easier than all the bookkeeping that is required with plastic.
edit: What idiot throws their change away when they pay in cash? I always put all my change at the end of the day into a very large jar. Then each year I take the jar to my credit union, which will count and cash the change for free, and it adds up to a couple hundred every year. No big deal.
OMG, cash is dirty! :Q  That's the statement of someone who probably takes cleaning product commercials at face value. Oooh, evil germs. Exposure to germs strengthens your immune system.
