My mom has an old hp 233mhz, 156mb ram, on win98. I have a copy of xp that I can install on her pc, but is it worth it? btw, she only has a 4gb hdd, and only 2.66 gb free. will the system even run?
No worth it as stated, but 2000 should run ok on that if stripped down. But I would just leave it alone and clean up the 98 install. Run a spyware removal program, disk cleanup, defrag, etc.
Hopefully she is at least running the SE version on Win 98. If she was unaware of updating the program, I would definitely make a point of going to Windows Updates by Microsoft and scan the operating system, downloading and installing all the critical updates. It will scan the system automatically once you allow it by clicking on the green arrow, to check and see what components the OS is missing. Don't worry about the noncritical updates and driver updates, but the critical updates are needed to solve OS vulnerability issues that have been discovered since the product release.
