The general is talking about the current generation of young would be recruits.

In military terms we've had 8 "generations" of recruits go thru during this war. There have been complaints of unfit recruits since the mid-90's and somehow we've been able to conduct multiple short wars and a really long war.

Theres a lot of bullshit being fed to us and its mostly from people who have been begging for extra money.

Perhaps. Fast food sort of evolved form a treat / quick bit on the road to a regular meal. It's surprising how many people eat out on a regular basis. Most places I've worked, I seem to be one of the few who actually brown bags their lunch.

The excuse I hear a lot is that people are too busy. Well, I'm busy too but I always seem to make the time. Same with friends who have families. The reality of it is that people are just too lazy or they never learned how to cook. They'd rather just reach for what's easy.

I don't usually go out for lunch just because it takes so much time to go off-base and get to anything good. Instead I hit the gym across the parking lot and have an Evol frozen burrito or Evol bowl & a protein shake.

That said there's no reason you can't lose weight on a fast-food diet. Jared from Subway did it, and he's a national role-model. :ninja:

We like to blame everything except for the person eating too many calories and doing too little exercise. If you can balance your bank account, you can balance your energy intake. It's not rocket science and there are tons of apps & resources to help you.

Is this measuring obesity based on BMI? Because if so, while the data certainly shows Americans are getting fatter, I wouldn't call a BMI over 30 a good indicator of obesity.

I have some XL BDUs/ACUs, and either America's harboring a race of muscle bound giants I've never seen, or there's some real fatties in the army. Fat enough I can't believe they made it through basic. I have to pull the pants up, and spread my legs to keep them from falling off til I get my belt fastened, and I'm not exactly tiny.

Restaurants have gone crazy on portion sizes because they're afraid their products won't be seen as a good value for the money. They pad their meals with cheap high calorie carbs, and you end up with fat people.

The one thing all the other countries I have been to had in common, was very little fast food places. Not like in American where they are on virtually every corner. I lived in Catania, which is in Sicily Italy for about 6 months. They had a Burger King and McDonalds, that was it. Tons of pizza joints though, but like real pizza and pasta. Not fast food kind. Other smaller cities around it had no fast food places.

Yep, if we only eliminated fast food/unhealthy restaurants everyone would go to their grocery store and buy fruits and vegetables because there is no way to get unhealthy food from a grocery store.

Ah, the old "BMI was made by mathmeticians and doesn't make sense" argument.

If you can bench 230lb or squat over 300lbs then BMI doesn't apply to you. Otherwise you're kidding yourself.

Maybe there's a link between obesity and global warming.

I live in state #43 and I would have pegged the obesity rate at closer to 50% than to 25%. It's frightening to believe that 42 states are even fatter than we are. Christ people, put down the Cinnabons once in a while and take a freaking walk.

But this is where the smart consumer should just buy one entree and split. Or if buying two you should save half for a later meal.

Not just entrees but appetizers too.
Used to be an app was just a teeny little thing to give you some taste before the real food arrived. Now apps are monstrous plates that cost as much as your entree.

On one hand, it's a good thing that we live in a post-scarcity society at least where food is concerned. Problem is we here in North America eat a shitty diet that's high in starch and empty calories. This is a society views cake with less sugar (muffins) as a health food.

Aggravating the problem is a sedentary lifestyle. That and this retarded "body acceptance" movement that wants to make fat the new ideal, or some BS.
Also the lack of some good solid genetic engineering to get us nice and adapted to post-scarcity.
These ancient genes still think that death by starvation is always a day away, so they work hard to ensure that precious food reserves are stored whenever possible, and unused energy-hungry muscles atrophy quickly.

Of course, our instincts would almost certainly prevent us from using such capabilities responsibly.
"Wonderful, another tool I can use to dominate other people!"
Maybe work engineering a solution to that problem, too.
And the issue of the biological tendency toward unsustainably prolific population growth.
(Life on this planet has a lot of bugs to work out.)

In lieu of that pleasant future, maybe a pill that reduces the feeling of hunger itself, without resorting to grotesque things like having to eat vegetables? Or good flavor packets for Soylent, assuming it ever gets cheap.

Not gonna lie, I don't get apps (except for bloomin' onions or pot stickers) because I can't justify spending 10 bucks on a few bites of food before my 30-80$ meal. Maybe in NY those are okay prices for an appetizer...but kind of outrageous anywhere else if you ask me.

Saw two ladies walking out of the office yesterday. Could have both passed off as pregnant, but I don't think that was the case.

Dont forget about desserts. They used to be tiny, their purpose was to settle your stomach. You really dont need more than two bites to do that.

Now desserts are massive piles of sugar and fat. Totally unneeded.

BMI isn't a "one size fits all" mold. People do have different builds and BMI isn't always accurate. A person with a large build but a BMI of 27 may look to be in far better shape than someone slight of build with a BMI of 24.

If I were to get my 6 foot frame down to 183 lbs to not be "overweight" based on BMI, I'd look like a cancer patient. I was 195 lbs at one point and had very little body fat.

I'm 6'2" and 168lbs. Your idea of what fat looks like is clearly skewed. "Cancer patient @ 183lbs." lol. You're a delusional fatty.

BMI was meant to be used on a population level where outliers won't matter as much. In other words, you can use it to tell if a city is composed of fat-asses but not any particular individual in the city.

Semi-active non-bodybuilding humans should be around BMI averages. It's pretty good for that.

Nebor gave the only real exception to BMI which is someone who has focused on muscle building and weight lifting will have proportionally more muscle than someone who is active but not building muscle and therefore a higher BMI.

After thinking about it some more, this genetic predisposition to get fat could eventually work itself out. Let these people keep getting fatter and fatter and they simply won't be able to have sex. If we can get the fatties fat early enough, we can Darwin them right out of the gene pool. :hmm:
