When I was in school many years ago there were only a couple fat kids. They got made fun of all the time. Fast forward to today, when I went to my sons school, fat kids everywhere. I don't think they get the hate either, there are to many of them.

I saw goonies on TV the other day. I remember when that movie came out, "Chunk" was a fat kid. Go watch it now... he doesn't look fat at all compared to today's kids.

I'm sure that Colorado statistic has something to do with the munchies.

Personally, I think all of this starts with staying away from fast food and commercially prepared cheap restaurant meals (fast food). There's also a major issue with portion control in the US. I recently started working on my weight, got my wife...her mom, coworkers involved. I've dropped 18lbs, my wife lost 30lbs, her mother lost 9lbs so far....and coworkers have too. I don't know how I inspire so many people in my life, but I have that effect on people.

When you start looking at what you eat, you'll see that it's not that difficult to lose weight if you're willing to make healthy substitutions and use common sense.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if there were at least one or two fast food places that actually served healthy low salt no fat foods?

I think Starbucks has made good progress in some of their prepared foods. Stay away from their drinks, for sure, but their pre-packaged sandwiches and bento box meals actually have a lot of fiber and protein in them and most come in under 600 calories.

Not sure if serious... but you're not entirely wrong. Hispanics have one of the highest rates of obesity.

Their food is extremely starchy and I'm sure that's a contributing factor. Try eating something that isn't greasy/fried when you go out to a mexican restaurant .

Food is cheap and calorie rich thanks to fast food, so people have the tendency to end up eating WAY too much.

I'm 6'2" and 168lbs. Your idea of what fat looks like is clearly skewed. "Cancer patient @ 183lbs." lol. You're a delusional fatty.
I don't know about the particular poster you quoted, but I have noticed that increasingly, people I'd consider "normal" or "healthy" weight are being referred to as "skin and bones" or something similar, like that quoted post said. My conclusion is as the country is getting heavier, the perception of what is "normal" has been skewed. Like I said, I've definitely noticed this trend, mainly in the past 10-15 years.

One thing that I think needs a serious review is the "based on a 2,000 calorie diet" metric. I've calculated my TDEE (164 lbs, 5'7" = Fat BMI) to be anywhere between 1400-1800 to maintain weight. To MAINTAIN weight. On days that I don't work out I go easy. If I do a 7 mile run on say, Monday, that opens up another 500 calories approximately that I can consume. To MAINTAIN.

I think too many people are overestimating how much they burn, or that 2,000 is somehow a good number to shoot for. I think it's still overeating for 75%+ of the population.

We are INSANELY imobile in todays society. Think about it. Wake up walk downstairs sit on couch. Get up, walk to car, sit in car, drive to work. Sit at work. Come home, sit on couch. Sleep. Repeat Mon-Friday.

That is literally what most peoples' days consist of. These people need to be eating around 1500 calories a day to lose weight and eventually get to, and maintain, a healthy weight.

1500 calories is a lot of calories, if you eat UNPROCESSED foods. As soon as you throw in noodles, or anything that mother nature doesn't make herself, you will blow through that real fast.

I rarely eat anything processed. I eat the shit out of some apples and some chicken though. Nom nom nom.

2,000 calories is for active people, and you're SUPPOSED to be active. Problem is too many Americans fall into the "completely inactive" category.

When I am in weight-maintenance mode, my TDEE is 2800, but that's lifting 3 times a week, and running 2 times a week, and then whatever activities I do with my kids all weekend.

Donald Trump is going to make us soooooooooo healthy and skinny.
Like THE BEST skinny you can imagine.
So skinny, we'll all have to wear flashing lights around our ankles so we can see each other coming.
The best goodest health we can ever be. Like really a big deal healthy.

What does Trump have to do with this you Fat Camp Reject?

Seriously....
In America it is IMPOSSIBLE to be healthy.
A buddy of mine has a lot of medical issues, smoked most of his life, and now paying the price BIG TIME !!!!!

Impossible? So nobody in the US is healthy? You mean it's only impossible for the weak, lazy and stupid, which explains you and your friend.

After fluid in the lungs, and several heart attacks, the doc says he must eat healthy and cut out or greatly reduce salt intake and lost weight.
So... try doing THAT in America without hiring a personal nutritionist.
Or try finding healthy food on the run that is actually healthy.
You won't find it at McDonald's, Wendy's, any Taco place, or major restaurant.

You realize fruit is easy to just grab and eat, right? Go into convenience store. Buy banana. Eat.

You're so stupid it hurts.

Our society is just not tuned to the health of its people.
The only food available out there is junk, crap, and full of salt and fat.
It is more than a challenge and truly a nightmare just trying not to kill yourself with the food we eat in America.
Getting healthy, staying healthy nutrition wise in America is impossible.

Eat fruit and vegetables. Those are everywhere. And cheap. Stop being so fucking lazy and stupid.

Unless you have the time and talent to cook everything from scratch, all day long, every day, day in day out, unless you can tackle that you are surely doomed.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if there were at least one or two fast food places that actually served healthy low salt no fat foods?
Veggies instead of fries, baked instead of deep fried, grilled instead of breaded?
There needs to be a law.
And fast food needs to be hung by the neck until dead.
It's either them.... or us.

Yes, it takes so much talent to take an apple and bite into it.

Sportage is such a good representation of the new Idiot Left. WE NEED LAWS BECAUSE WE CAN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO EAT FRUIT!!!!! THE BANANA WAS TOO HARD TO PEEL!!!!!

If fast-food were abolished, I think this would be much less of a problem.

I scrolled through the article, and wonder if we are all using the same numbers.

Here is what I looked at for BMI range:
http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/obesity/basics/symptoms/con-20014834

And calculated here. I am at 26.1.
https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/educational/lose_wt/BMI/bmicalc.htm

And I am honestly trying to lose at least 15 pounds. Not trying super hard, but eating a lot better than I was, say, a year ago.

Thanks for the links. I'm now 24.1 BMI. This time last year I was 35.9.

I may have to do some more research but I was shocked when I did a few quick calculators and it had me at below 2000. I work out about 4 days a week pretty good, so those days I'm sure I'm over 2k... but I still try to maintain 1500 or less (weekends I blow it with alcohol).

I bought a food scale a year ago and man was I in for a surprise when you see EXACTLY HOW MUCH a serving is. 30 grams? Psh. Yeah those noodles may only be 200 calories. My serving size? 7! I was like 'no freaking way'.

I learned to eat real food instead of human made crap, and eat smaller portions. Sometimes I get hungry but I chalk it up to either boredom or I just fill my gut with water.

What's your height and weight? 1500 seems pretty low for being active, unless you are tiny.

Keep in mind those TDEE calculators are supposed to be just rough estimates to use as a starting point. Once you get going you're supposed to tweak it up and down until your weight levels off (that is if you are looking to maintain)

5'7" 164 lbs.

I run probably... 10 miles or so per week on average, and then maybe an hour of some muscle stuff between two days. Other than that I have a super office-ey job where I sit on my ass and teach though.

Went to the LA fair last week. So many morbidly obese people, what was really sad were their kids (4-10yo) were also so fat some might have been even double the weight of my own kids the same age. I’m thinking looking at my own kids, these people will not even live to see their grandkids come into existence and will just be a drain on society since their bodies are being destroyed.

Yeah. I'm well known to be a fat person hater, for sure, but I genuinely get sad and depressed when I see the 10 year olds or younger who have bigger breasts than my wife and triple chins. I hate having to pick my 3rd grader up from school, some of the kids are half my size which is crazy to me. It's a huge shame because these kids have done nothing wrong, all they did was eat what their parents put in front of them, but you know the shitstorm that is heading their way. Not just the medical stuff, but the bullying and probable eating disorders etc. Just not a good life at all. And it's all preventable! Parents are to blame. Really wish they could do some child abuse stuff or something... would be too hard to enforce though. 80% of the nations' kids would be taken by CPS.

Probably because people buy the XL Fartburger meal, a chicken sandwich on the side, and a sundae for dessert cause diet soda has anti-calories. One diet soda negates everything else in the meal, and the effect can be stored. Drink Diet Coke all day? That means you can take an extra donut at work, and eat what you want for dinner.

This was me last year. I'd get a 12 inch subway sandwich, chips, and a large drink.. Then I'd refill the drink when leaving the restaurant, go back to my desk, break out a candy bar or chips or something, snack for 10 minutes, then work.

Now, I can't even polish off a single big mac or TB burrito. I stay away from diet sodas also, and most soda in general. I'm a water drinker now and like it.

I am fat guy here, I have tried getting healthier by eating more veggies and more meat and less prepackaged foods. Also staying active helps.

I believe a large part of the problem is all the corn syrup and sugar added to everything ...

Man, it's not the fault of the people. There is something in the food or water supply that is causing this to happen. Like the op said, the thinnest state (colorado) is as fat as the fattest state from 1990 (mississippi). There has not been a lot of change in people's diets or exercise habits or work patterns in those measly 25 years. There are many more gyms now than there used to be when I was a kid. We used to only have a few bally's fitnesses around but now we got Lifetime, LA fitness, Planet fitness, and 24hour fitness.

There is something in the food supply fucking people up. What's more, it has been clearly shown in many studies that babies are fatter now than they used to be at only a few months of age. You can't argue that work or exercise is lacking for infants because they have never gotten either. Prenatal exposure to some sort of artificial chemical is making people fat for life.

I've been changing my diet over time, substituting or completely removing 1 bad thing at a time. For example, I almost never eat cheese anymore which used to be on most of my meals.

My M-F diet I think is pretty good, however I could use some criticisms if you have any:

Every breakfast I have 1 banana covered by 1oz of dry oatmeal.

My lunch consists of:
1 apple

Approx 1-2oz fruits / veggies. Generally they are berries (cranberries, blueberries and strawberries), however sometimes this will be carrots / watermelon / or something else

Approx 5oz of chicken, along with a small mix of white rice, peas, green beans, broccoli, cauliflower and carrots. Add in a small amount of low sodium soy sauce. Overall the meal is probably 6-8oz as it usually gets eyeballed.

This is spread out over eating every 1hr-90mins

Then for dinner it varies. I know some of the problems I have such as I do eat croutons, cheddar cheese and ranch on my salad every tuesday, and I have a decent amount of bread on Mondays and cheese and lite mayo, but the other days it is usually just chicken with veggies or ground turkey with tomatoes and onion. Are my 2 bad days really killing me?

Also I almost regularly eat 1oz of dry roasted peanuts / other nuts every day.

Combined with this I usually walk at least 4 miles a day, but sometimes I go as high as 10, probably average around 5mi/day in a given week.

Any obvious improvements? I'm not super smart about this stuff, but have been trying to make 1 positive improvement every other week or so. Trying to decide what is next.

Thanks.

EDIT:

Forgot to mention I allow myself one "treat" per week. This will be a pop or a candy bar for example. Outside of that I only drink water or black coffee. Usually consume about 80oz water/day, more if you count the coffee.
