It may have racist connotations to some, but it could also mean something like, "If I knew we would lose the war and be run by the North (liberals/Obama etc.), then I would have released the slaves and picked my own cotton". I guess its popular because no one knows what "this" is, so they put whatever grievance they have as the "this" in their mind.

This is why I have no bumper stickers on my car, because people see what they want in them.

Could be, I suppose, seems likely that's it, but it doesn't seem apparent just reading it. Must be a quote or something that a certain region would be aware of or something.

It basically carries the same connotation as "go back to africa" remarks. Arguably not racist per se, but for reasons easily figured nearly always said by racists/conservatives.

Bleh. IMO the South won the civil war, since they got to stay in the Union. I bet if you could find a competent medium and get in touch with Abe, assuming he hasn't decided to reincarnate since then, a few hours of her telling him what's happened since them would change his mind on keeping the South.

Insight into southern conservatism in a nutshell:

Presumably the car belonged to one of them good ol boys.

I'm confused about your confusion. The meaning of it seems crystal clear me. First of all, it displays a confederate flag. What do we generally know about people who display confederate flags in the 21st century? Then there's what is says, which seems pretty obvious me to. YMMV I guess.

Doesn't really explain it to me.

I was sure that when she said we rewarded a "gropey perv" once before for higher office, they'd show a pic of Bill Clinton, but apparently we have pretty short memories these days. That said, jeez, what a creep this Johnnie Caldwell character is. I'd rather think of him as an outlier. Please, let him be an outlier, lol.

It means the man who display the sticker doesn't like the USA the way it is now (have black people). White people regret it that they imported salves from Africa to pick cotton (cotton was biggest agriculture at the time) for them and later Lincoln freed them. If they would have known Lincoln will free them and now black people have same rights with whites, they wouldn't have imported slaves hundreds years ago.

He sported a goatee and cheap walmart shades and cigarettes all over his dashboard as if they were battle tokens.

I wonder why people still think its ok to be overt monsters. I can understand being racist on the inside, what makes him think running around acting like a moran is a smart idea?
It reminded me of an incident at Hooters back in 2010, when 2 black dudes walked in and sat at the bar. A white guy sitting there asked the waitress if she was gonna serve their kind. I don't recall the exact words but he ended up throwing a fistful of change at her and storming out.

Was hoping in 7 years the residents of Manassas would have made a bit of progress.
But then it occurred to me we are knee deep in the 21st century and they still haven't joined civilized society, so I guess I'm asking too much.

On an unrelated note, I dont like this place much even though I'm white. Northern Virginia has the rudest, meanest, angriest, most hostile human beings I've ever met. And I've lived all over the world.
If someone would give me a damn job I'd leave this place in less than 24 hours.
That's a pretty shitty thing to have on your truck.

@shortylickens , instead of characterizing this fellow as an "overt monster," perhaps this sticker with its admission of regret could serve a conversation starter. Would they have picked their own cotton? Could they have, seeing as it was highly labor intensive? How does such a sentiment relate to feelings about race relationships in today's society? Sadly, these conversations are absent in our self-created online echo chambers; this will ultimately be to our serious detriment, if not undoing.

Bill got elected in part for plausibly posing as one of them good ol boys.

Yes I'm sure thats the reason people stick words on their cars, so they can have conversations. Perhaps we could have rolled down our windows and screamed at each other whilst driving 45 miles per hour down a packed four lane road.

Taking my post literally misses the point, but don't let me get in the way of your hatred.

That's a good way to get shot.

I heard that in the south if you hit what you aimed at, and they live, it's a misdemeanor.
That's what you meant to do.
If you miss them, it's a felony because you meant to kill them.
The only reason you could have missed is because you were so mad.
