January 14, 1997 - Freedom of Speech on the Internet Upheld
The ACLU sued New York State, claiming its new law imposing restrictions on indecent online material was unconstitutional. The New York law, which made it a crime to post material on the Web that might be "harmful to minors," was one of several that the ACLU challenged in 1996 and 1997, including the Communications Decency Act, which the Supreme Court rejected in the summer of 1997. The New York suit, joined by libraries, publishers, and Internet groups, was successful, and New York's law was overturned in June 1997
