1. Prime95 is an approved tool. Its on the MRI. Its rare that I need a tool thats not approved anymore. If its going to be that difficult, i'm likely manually editing the registry, etc.
2. Are your agents not using the Agent Checklist during diagnostics and repairs? It has space for what scans have been run (DFT/Memtest/PC Check, fan functionality) up top, and room for any notes you need to leave on the bottom 3/4. And the back has nice post-op procedures.

I like your update.
This is typical retail. Those responsible for a customer's complaints never have to answer for it. The customer can only bitch at the dude on the sales floor because you represent the entire company. As a customer I would love to bitch directly at the person responsible, but sadly don't have that option usually.

I had a story similar to that when i worked at Radio Shack.

A person came in and threw her laptop and external CD burner on the counter and asks if we have blank discs. Sure, we are radio shack, we have overprice poor quality CD's. I had to burn what she needed also off onto the disc. She left after buying the discs and not even a thank you for doing the extra work of burning her stuff off. Looking back, i should have asked for money before i started to work on it. But oh well, for every story like that i have one that had a good out come.

I worked as a tech at bestbuy for 2 years (before GeekSquad). I guess we had a lot more freedom then, because we would use whatever software/knowledge we needed to fix computers. I think there were around 15 techs total by the time I quit, and I'd say that 5 of them were really good technicians, the other 10....could barely plug in a computer. But yea, you do have to take a lot of customer abuse, its a good thing though because it will slowly start to affect you less and less each time.

This is why I work for a company that only works on Business computers and networks. We get people asking us to fix their home computers and we just send them to MakeItWork. It just isn't worth it to fix home computers. Hell even business clients are a major pain sometimes, but at least they arent the ones paying me to fix it(they just bill the company), so they don't complain as much.

I had a similar experience working as a Best Buy warehouse tech, although nearly all of the people I worked with had at least a decent amount of computer knowledge at the time. We pretty much had free reign in terms of what we used to get the job done. The main problems we came across, and these happened a LOT, dealt with ordering parts (e.g., discontinued models, waiting for orders to be sent to us, etc.).

Poor OP, BestBuy. Most of the time Geek Squad doesn't even look at the items properly, usually they are trained to sell things. Your stories sound all too familiar about getting stuff back broken and non-repaired, from friends and stories from the link below.

Get some popcorn and check out www.bestbuysux.org for some good stories. Also being in customer service pretty much means you will be the punching bag, it's fairly common.

Hmm, it sounds like you are having a lot of fun there ....
My suggestion, seek call center employment...

It might suck too, but you'll probably make a couple of bucks more per hour ....

Truth be told, as the "computer guy" your job is to know more about everything that goes on in the entire store than anyone else.

A girl comes in looking for a CD but can't find find a salesman (they're all off oogling some girl in the car audio department). CD's are technical. The computer guy is technical. It's not hard to see why she came to you.

Busty Blonde: Excuse me. I have a question. What is the difference between Hi and Digital video tapes?

Andy: I'm not a salesman, so, I could probably...

Jay: Welcome to Smart Tech. How can I be of service to you?

It the job you chose, quit the job or your whining. Customers complain, managers are usually not helpful; welcome to the workforce.
