toekramp's life is being flipped upside down

Well it's been a long time coming. I've lived in Nothern Virginia for over 3 years now, wanting to leave since the moment I arrived. The jobs around here are amazing but that's about where it ends. I decided it was time for me to find a new local and have decided on Denver. I have been planning this for a couple months, and finally today let my boss know that the 19th will be my last day (I'm having my tonsils removed tomorrow so couldn't actually do it on the 5th).

I have no job lined up, nor a place to stay. I'm taking whatever fits in my vehicle and just going.

Wish me luck!

Update 1: Well I did it. Left my job Thursday, got in the car Friday morning and pretty much drove straight through, 25 hours (took a break about 18 hours in and slept at a rest stop for 2 hours). One of my friends mentioned that her Aunt's friend was looking to sublet a fully furnished apt for 2 months while her son is in Spain. So I arrived in Denver @ 1:30pm and by 3:00 I was moving my stuff into the place. I have an interview with Northrop on Tuesday and things are looking pretty promising. Plus it's snowing like crazy. So far so good

Update 2: Had a few interviews this passed week, and happy to say I've accepted a position with NG. Salary is quite nice, more than i was makin' in the DC area, and considering how much cheaper the cost of living is, I'm psyched (they even threw in a signing bonus). So in the first 5 days I've found a place to stay, a new job, and already joined and played with a soccer team. Everything is looking up. Hopefully things will continue in this direction. Thanks to all that offered to submit my resume and what not!

Good luck...having just spent some time in Denver, I have to say it's not a place I would like to live, but maybe it is for you (it sure is for several of my friends).

And don't worry, there are plenty of homeless all over the place downtown you can stay with if you don't find a job!

You couldn't pay me to live in Denver.

I have family there and recently saw a lot of it (and surrounding area) for work.

I couldn't wait to board the plane home.

I've never been to Denver.

I've been through parts of Virginia though and can't say that it's a place I'd like to call home...well, maybe some of the coastal areas in northern Virginia but only if I didn't have to commute into DC.

I'll stay here in sunny San Diego.

Denver is an ok town. IMO, its greatest asset is all the outdoor recreational opportunities that are just a short drive away (Rocky Mountains National Park, etc.)

all things relative to NoVA/DC area

-cheaper cost of living ("Stated another way, it's 23.3% cheaper to live in Denver-Aurora, Colorado than Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, Washington DC")
-outdoor activities
-wanted to head west
-still have seasons
-have the mountains close by
-outdoor activities
-large Gov Contractor community

downtown is small, the city and surroundings stretch out a LONG ways

Boulder is basically a suburb now

sprawling - It's a big city
devoid of character - you've never been to Kansas City
boring - only if you let it. I had tons of fun even though I didn't have much $
traffic - normal for a city of it's size
expensiveby midwest standards. Not as bad as the East or West coasts
shitty weather - yeah...if you don't like living in the city that has the most sunny days. If you like snow but don't like it to last for more than two days.

I like Denver and would move back. I like it enough that if I don't like someone, I will discourage them from moving there by telling them all of the things K1052 said.

Other than the "character" aspect and possibly the "boring" one if you don't like outdoorsy stuff...how could someone from Chicago say that Denver is more expensive, sprawling, has worse traffic and has worse weather?

expensive for what you get, IMO

for being not even one of the larger metro areas their traffic sucks, no commuter rail and only a light rail line that serves a fraction of the area

see snowfall of last year

Wow I've been thinking of doing the same thing.
I currenty live in No VA and work in MD and I absolutely hate this area lol. I've been thinking of moving back to Texas to take over the family business (dad's retiring) but the only thing holding me back is health insurance.

GL to the OP. I do hope you have at least a few months of $$$ savings before you head to Denver.

Hummm...since I don't have any kids, maybe I could just pack my SUV and do as the OP??...let us know how it turns out for you.
