sh**Ty weather??? how do you figure? we get more sunshine than any other city. you want shItty weather go to the PNW

That's right...average of 300 days of sunshine per year. Can't beat that!

Beats living up here in the Pacific Northwest, where it's more like 300 days of rain per year.

Having lived in Denver and Vancouver, I'd have to say the weather is a whole lot better in Denver than Vancouver.

Of course, you can't really compare weather in a semi desert with a rainforest...

Best of luck - what an exciting adventure in store for you. I did the same 9 years ago - got tired of NoVa and left the area with just what's in my car and drove to Dallas with no jobs lined up. Found temp work within a couple weeks and made new friends from those jobs. Lots has changed then and I wouldn't be able to do such a thing anymore but never regretted it.

Denver is an ok town. IMO, its greatest asset is all the outdoor recreational opportunities that are just a short drive away (Rocky Mountains National Park, etc.)

80% of the reason i'm moving there

Trust me... the other 20% will make you want to leave after a while. Denver is not a very interesting place at all.

Other than the "character" aspect and possibly the "boring" one if you don't like outdoorsy stuff...how could someone from Chicago say that Denver is more expensive, sprawling, has worse traffic and has worse weather?

expensive for what you get, IMO

for being not even one of the larger metro areas their traffic sucks, no commuter rail and only a light rail line that serves a fraction of the area

see snowfall of last year

K1052 has no idea what he/she is talking about!

sprawling.....yes, every part of it is different
devoid of character....It has a very diverse set of cultures
boring...Broncos, six flags, mountain climbing, kayaking, camping, Rockies (BB), Hockey,
traffic ...has nothing on NY, LA or Chicago
expensive...see previous
shitty weather- It's the sunniest state in the country...yeah, that really sucks. It's far sunnier than here in SoCal, and that says something. I have spent half of my life there, back and forth with my respective (divorced) parents...and k1052 is completely off the rocker. Unfounded claims.

Good Luck, in all the years I have lived in NoVA I have realized that this will not be the place I 'd want to settle down and live after I graduate. Here, we have jobs everywhere and the quality of life is good. However, even though DC is close by, fun is limited. Job stress and traffic make NoVA a place that young people want to get away from (many of my friends are lining up jobs everywhere but here). In short, living in NoVA makes you older faster.

You truly have courage though and I wish you the best! Have a

I'd love to do the same. Been cooped up in Ohio for way too long, and it's horrible because I need real outdoor activities to feel happy. I absolutely love it whenever I actually have the chance to go out west and backpack in the mountains, canyons, whathaveyou.

Want to backpack a hell of a lot more. Want to take up rock climbing. Want to take up kayaking. Want to take up mountain biking. Want A BETTER PLACE TO TAKE PHOTOS.

Love the clean, fresh air, the natural scenery, and the wide open spaces.

Not sure about Denver specifically though. If it's still really far from the mountains that's not too cool. If it doesn't have a Chinatown with authentic Chinese food that's not cool for me either

Denver is 2nd only to Miami (maybe they're first?) in sun days/year. sure you're closer to the sun, hence the higher rate of skin cancer...but you got against the sun?

anyhoo, I recommend you finding some nice people to hang with on Colfax avenue. They'll have plenty of recommendations on what to do with your car full of stuff.

anyoo, I do agree that Denver kinda sucks. I go out there once a year then head into the mountains for skiing. If you like skiing--then I can't imagine a better place to be. plus, If you like random 70 degree days in March followed by a white-out blizzard the next day, then Denver rocks for that.

oh yeah:

Congrats on upgrading the  selection.

might I recommend trying out the Bull & Bush while you're there? Careful though, it could become your permanent residence. Not sure if it's everyday or not, but 1/2 price apetisers + kick-ass beer at happy hour can help save some coin. Also, tons of execs, corporate types hang out there at that time, and they're easy to strike-up a conversation with. ...could even help you to land a job

Good luck. There are much better parts of VA than where you're living. I'd definitely hate living in NoVa.

Excellent point... I live in downtown Chicago and when I read K1052's message I thought of this city. I kind of hate it here sometimes.

If you are bored here the problem is you and not the city.

Go for it. I hit Flagstaff in 1977 with nothing but change in my pocket. you just have to be open to whatever it takes to make a living. I used to change cities and states like socks when I was young. Update when you can bro!

:music:Now you'd like to take a minute just sit right there, and you'll tell us about how you became the prince of a town called Den-ver?:music:

In all seriousness, after taking an extensive vacation through many western states (Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah) and returning to central Ohio, I am pretty much going to do the same thing. Haven't decided for sure where I am moving, but probably going to be New Mexico, as I stayed on an organic farm in which I am welcome back anytime.

I only drove by Denver on my way to the Boulder/Nederland area, but I really liked the 75 mph speed limits.
