The story is good. The gameplay is pretty meh.

The abilities in the first one are not balanced very well, some abilities dominate and some are worthless.

Also do not bother with a sniper rifle - just pretend it is not an option in the game. It left a bad taste in my mouth to have to restart because using a rifle is not really an option. It is useful at some points in the game but the sway combined with the fact that it doesn't do that much extra dps and many encounters are right in your face make the entire gun into a sale.

I played it when it first came out on PC and it was my personal GOTY, beating out Bioshock, Fallout 3, Sins of a Solar Empire, World of Goo, as well as dozens of others.

It's really the story. The gameplay is okay, but the storyline really pulls you in, so it's definitely for someone that's more interested in the story experience than say the COD MW2 solid fundamental gameplay experience.

Mass Effect 2 is a better game, but much more satisfying if you use your ME1 character and have decisions transferred over.

I'm a story heavy game fan so I enjoyed all of Bioware's games and honestly, the first time I played it, I'd give it a 9.5. Now that I know most of the dialogue by heart after various playthroughs, a 7 or so.

I never found the sniper rifles bad. I would pick off enemies from afar then switch to my assault rifle and mow them down up close. I'd easily give the first one a solid 9. The story is what makes the game. The Mako stuff isn't as bad as people make it out to be...

Agreed with the previous posters -- the story is very good (it made me pick up the two books based in the same universe), but the gameplay wasn't great. Maybe it was because I played with the sniper rifle as my primary weapon. I have Mass Effect 2, but because my first ME was on the xbox 360 and I wanted to carry my character over, I had to get ME2 for the xbox as well and I rarely play it any more -- I mostly play PC games now.

I'm sure you know, both are available for pc now and I have read the PC version is better...

I was thinking of getting this once I've finished Batman AA. Presumably it should be pretty cheap now...

Right, but since I had already played the first game on the xbox, the only way I could continue my character was to get the second one for the xbox as well.

You can download a save game that did everything you "wanted" in ME. It isn't like you get to keep specific items. Just if you hit the level cap and the decisions you made saved over. I hear lots of complaints about the PC versions being consolized. I have them for PC and never had a problem with either.

10. ME2 in particular is one of the most enjoyable games I've ever played (and if you enjoy interesting characters / stories, it'll likely be the same for you).

For some reason I just can't get into it.

Is it the gameplay, the pace of the game, story...I just don't know why.

ME2 is currently $10 on Impulse. But I want it on Steam, where I have ME1.

ME1 is excellent, OP. as others have said, it's all about the story. The gameplay is fun, but a bit cookie-cutter. the planet exploration gets real derivative and repetitive, but those are simply distractions that you can happily ignore if you want. It would be nice if those gave you tangible bonuses or cool items, but in the end, collecting all those minerals and artifacts are just part of completing a nice tally at the end. There is no in-game benefit to it.

There is some element to tactical combat, but I did just fine running and gunning my way through most of it.

Yes, ASS Effect is pretty decent.

plot: 3/10
pretty generic/shitty, not much to say about it

characters: 9/10
interesting characters and dialogue

gameplay:9/10
the actual shooter gameplay is pretty standard, but most of the fun comes from character interactions

Like all bioware games, I would recommend playing it.

I'd give it an 8 or 9 out of 10. ME is an excellent game, with a great storyline. They do a very good job making your decisions matter... and making you regret them later.

I don't really have any problems with the gameplay as others have mentioned, but I would suggest playing on hard. It is very easy even at that.

Play ME if only to prepare yourself for ME2. ME2 is one of the best games I've ever played, easily a 10 out of 10.

The cinematic dialogue was easily the most impressive thing about the game IMHO. Going with a fully voiced main character was definitely the right move for the Mass Effect series.

It was strange going from no ammo to "ammo" clips in the 2nd game though, bad decision to revert that choice. Also they really gimped biotic users in the 2nd game in terms of power variety. In the first you actually felt pretty powerful to have all these abilities at your disposal as a biotic user, and then in the 2nd game you find every single character has some form of biotic-like ability.

I've talked about this before.

Bioware games rarely have good plots, and Mass Effect has one of the worse plots Bioware has come up with.

ME's plot has nothing innovative, refreshing, or intriguing. It is run-of-the-mill science fiction. I knew all the "plot twists" from a mile away. Game's like Mass Effect is why video games get such a bad reputation for having shitty stories.

Nor did they take the time to properly develop the world of Mass Effect, as well as they alien races. There was no real though put into the designs of the creatures, or the history, or the lore.

The best part of ME, and all bioware games, is allowing the character interaction so that the player can take an active role in the development of his own character and other characters - something a book could never do effectively.

Mass Effect one is a good game. Not amazing, but certainly very good on the first playthrough. Mass Effect two, however, when used with an imported character from ME1, is one of gaming's best experiences.

IMHO.

Can you import from the PC version?

Mass Effect was a great game. The plot was pretty amazing, although I found a lot of the gameplay repetitive if you wanted to do the side quests. Something tells me, though, that without the side quests I would have been done in about 1/10th the time.

Oh and what was wrong with the sniper rifle? I went straight sniper and had no problems whatsoever.
