Rip's intro of the Elian bit, besides being purely diversionary, is factually incorrect, and denies the rights of the father to have his son returned to him- so much for "family values" from the Republicans... It's another excellent example of misinformation and hypocrisy from the far Right. The court of appeals did not prevent the removal of elian from his relatives' home, at all, but rather prevented his deportation until the phony "political asylum" issue was resolved, which it was, several months later, and elian returned to Cuba with his father. Elian's removal from his relatives' home was to his father, who had travelled from Cuba to take custody of his son... does this all mean that the Right opposes Paternal rights wrt a minor child, or what? Or that they'll renounce their own "values" to suck up to the Cuban population in Florida, the same way they're sucking up to and manipulating the right to life crowd wrt Schiavo?

Perhaps the thread title is misleading- it's tough to be a hypocrite when one has no moral compass, no principles beyond winning by any means possible, but merely exploits any emotional situation on an ad hoc basis for the purpose of garnering votes...

Even after I pointed out the real story wrt elian on page 1, Rip persists with lies and distortions. Reno never defied a court order as suggested by Rip, because no such order was ever issued. The DoJ returned Elian to the rightful custody of his father, here in the US, pending legal action wrt his return to Cuba. Very straightforward-

Notice the April 19, 2000 entry- the court blocked his immediate return to Cuba, not his return to his father... after being forcibly removed from his relatives' home, and after the legal wrangling was over, they returned to Cuba, together... No hypocrisy, merely the rule of law...

If you'd care to contend otherwise, Rip, please cite the court order forbidding the DoJ to remove Elian from his relatives' home, forbidding them to return Elian to the custody of his father- link it, quote it, don't just give us some right-think interpretation of that decision.... otherwise, you're just spreading your usual falsehoods... It's your contention, Rip, so put up, or, lacking a more polite way to put it, just shut up.

If Jeb Bush took Schiavo under protective custody? on what legal basis, Rip? Her parents', and congress' options have all been exhausted under both state and federal law, both of which affirmed marital rights, just as Reno and the courts affirmed parental rights in the Elian affair... Conservatives apparently don't believe in either one, not anymore, not under the leadership of guys like Delay...

obviously as long as the other side makes the same mistake its ok. it can be argued that the reno move was a mistake. actually, it can be argued that she made quite a few. either way, it doesnt excuse her actions. nor should any fact of "they did it too" be an excuse..thoguh it often is if you listen to hannity.
while i dont know if i agree with this being hypocracy...i do know he is very much a hypocryte, willing to do whatever is in his best interest. this story coupled with the audio tape of him talking about how good this will be for the party and how terri was sent from god as a tool to be used by the party doesnt look so good.

DeLay, and Bush (the president, not the governor) deserve to be targets here. How can specific legislation, the obviously impossible call to visit congress, and other actions aimed at changing the outcome not be considered undermining the judicial process?

There are many similarities between Schiavo and DeLay's father: neither had any possible hope of recovery, and both were being kept alive artificially.
