Tomato vs DD-WRT

So, lots of conversations and information out on the internets, and I'm sure everybody who saw the title of this thread thought "oh god...", but I was just curious if people could post if they actually have tried both, which one they prefer, and why.

I looked at the title and thought "Wow sombody else has Tomato". I've been using it for over a year. I liked all the available information it gave me. I didn't notice any operational difference but I don't do much more than BT, web browsing, email. The tweeking seems easier then DD-WRT, but here again, thats just what I prefer. I've had no issues with either one.

I have 2 linksys routers both running tomato.

At the time I read about them the, both would do what I needed. My main take on them was:
Tomato is aimed at being more streamlined for speed and the GUI is easier to use.
DDWRT goes towards adding features that some may find useful.

I went with tomato because:
It was suppose to be easier to use.
It would do what I needed.
I didn't have any use for the extra features that DDWRT had.
Hopefully by not having the extra features it might be faster.

I'm actually thinking of loading up one of my spare routers with Tomato, just to compare the two.

I used HyperWRT for several years and loved it. Tried DD-WRT and it was very feature packed (multiple VLANs, etc.) but tried Tomato and stuck with it. A guy at BroadbandReports.com (forum) did a speed test on the firmwares (compared to stock) and Tomato was pretty much the fastest of the third party firmwares (strangely enough, the stock firmware was the overall fastest in transfer speed).

Tomato has just the right blend of features and speed that I like and so far, has run well (no lockups, etc).

If the current features of Tomato is what you need and you do not for see in the near future change in your needs (as far as Wireless Router concern ) go with Tomato.

Otherwise, DD-WRT.

I do Not want to create Anxiety again, but if One is an Enthusiasts that is Not afraid of Flashing and dealing with variety of interfaces it does not really matter. I.e. for the features that each one provides they both work well. Some people claim that Tomato'a Ajax provides faster performance but I did not see it on my systems.

So why I said go with Tomato? For users that is really Not into these things, Tomato is some what easier to install and have a more pleasant Menu system.

DD-WRT, because it supports a wider hardware base and has some newer features.

I used both, and left DD-WRT about 2 years ago, due to problems with DHCP, QoS and instability. And I have not used it since I gave Tomato a chance. So I just read DD-WRT forum from time to time, but I have not tried anymore. So I can not say much about it, but I will tell my experience with Tomato.
Since I have VoIP in my house, I needed an effective QoS, and Tomato does that very well.
I would say that both has GUI, so I not all that hard to setup the router.
But I think Tomato's QoS is trickier to set, and the access restriction is way different to set compared to DD-WRT.
DD-WRT comes with more features than Tomato. But Tomato has many variants and mods with more features like DD-WRT.

And Tomato has its limitations like only 50 entries in DHCP static lease list, up to 50 QoS rules, 50 access retriction rules. But the a few mods take the limitations off.

I used to use HyperWRT and Engineer convinced me to try Tomato. I prefer Tomato over DD-WRT due to it's ease of use. If you need the extra features though, DD-WRT for sure. If you just want some extras, Tomato is great and a bit more simple (IMHO) than DD-WRT.

I'm honestly shocked that there are so many recommendations Tomato over DD-WRT. But the consensus everywhere I go seems to be that Tomato is simpler, less bloat, faster, and better QoS (and the new version includes TCP Vegas), which are all of the things I'm really looking for. Looks like I'll probably be installing Tomato.

P.S. There was a New York City Fancy Car store that sells these cars a block away form NYU Medical Center. I use to pass it twice a day in my way to and from work, and see the collection of the above cars in the front Windows. :brokenheart:

HyperWRT served me fine until the WOL issue.

My current version of Tomato is handling the WOL problem now so I need no need to change to anything else.

Haven't tried tomato, but dd has been good to me so far. I don't use most of the features, but the build in netflow is really nice (they call it rflow, but my netflow collector seems to accept the data...).

It was more of a "PSA" for those that "might" need a little more (or want a little more) flavor than the standard tomato provides!
