Put on some tight shorts and hang out in front of frat row. You might get one for free.

Buy the "Le Grand Cigar" only.

It's worth $10,000 and its wrapper is a piece of the original US Constitution. It was hand-rolled by Queen Elizabeth during her wild years and was buried with George Burns until graverobbing space mushrooms-- Uh, well you know the rest.

$10 is probably a good budget for a cigar. I've had some that were upwards of 20 and some that were only two bucks. I find that around the 10 dollar range are smooth, have a great taste, and don't get bitter until near the end. Also they are rolled or whatever to the point that it will burn freely and evenly.

Ask the people selling them, they usually have a good idea of which ones are good and can recommend them.

I've started a little notebook that I write in to keep track of which ones I like

Tobacco people are the best people. They'll help you get started picking a cigar, and show you how to cut, and light it. Don't be afraid to ask questions.

Quick question, why are Cuban cigars so sought after?

Because they are illegal. I've had one, and really, they are good, but no better than a lot of the good cigars that are honduran, etc etc.

The guys at a decent tobacco shop will cut or "poke" the cigar for you. A lot of them also will simply give you a cheap cutter if you spend 10-15 dollars with them. I've probably got 5+ cheap cutters laying around my house that they've just given me.

If it's your first time you might want to have them do the "poking" thing. Honestly, I love a cut cigar, getting a little tobacco in my mouth heightens the buzz and is sometimes tasty to boot, but a lot of people (read: first timers) don't want the tabaccy getting in their mouth.

Edit: as mentioned above, make sure that you have them demonstrate how to light it. It's not difficult, but if you've never done it before it's easy to not get an even light out of it.

illegality does have something to do with it, but the cubans are known for their exceptional rolling and quality tobacco. the best Cuban cigars are among the best in the world, but yeah, Honduras, Nicaragua, DR...plenty of fine cigars made elsewhere.

I will not dispute this, but the reason they have been so sought after all these years is because of the trade embargos.

And something I did forget to mention that someone else brought up - Whatever you are wearing WILL smell like smoke afterwards. It doesn't matter how you smoke the cigar, you will smell like it afterwards. If you're going out with friends who aren't smoking, then you may want to bring some cologne or spray with you.

cubans aren't as good as they used to be. keep it in your humidor for a while for optimal tastiness. some cigars use cuban seed but grown in other places.

probably too strong for a beginner, but i've been loving some Pio VIs.

ask a lot of questions, guys at the tobacco shop love to talk about it and you'll learn a lot. and if you don't like, try another one! cigars are like fine cheese, there's a million different types with different tastes, sizes, strengths, and draws.

Davidoff Anniversario #1

Arturo Fuente Opus X

Both are fantastic in their own way, but are fairly expensive.

On the cheaper side: Try an Avo Uvezian. Not too pricey. Very nice.

Wearing synthetic fibers above the waist helps reduce the aftersmell a bit. Being bald further reduces it.

Lose the cologne, you'd be better off just bringing a change of shirt. OK, cologne too, if necessary.

I love scotch.

I've been eying on trying cigars but constantly decide against it because the negative effects of it is no better than cigarettes:

1. You and your clothes smell like shit
2. Your mouth doesn't care if it's cigar or cigarette. It's terrible for dental health (teeth, gums, tongue)
3. I believe it's still bad for your lungs although you don't inhale it.

Not a good habit.

Cigars are alright. I got a sampler pack for some ridiculous price a while ago (sampler deals show up from time to time, check hot deals forum). They're pretty nice. I don't know how to cut or light them, but I manage. I think you'll enjoy it. Just remember you're not supposed to inhale the smoke. More like sucking a straw.
