Better yet, just give the whole area to Haliburton and Exxon Mobil and promise them "unrestricted" drilling rights. With the profits they're making, they can afford their own army to take care of the "trespassers" on their new land

Damnit, had to do a retarded project at school today (my God I wasted the day) and just missed it by an hour. Now, I need someone to summarise the episode for me. Whoever does so, "I won't be mad if you don't know who said what. I won't punish you if you get the answers wrong. I can teach and tell you." (Quote just feels so appropriate)

Jack gets brought back to CTU, talks to Marilyn, and finds out that Audrey died in a car accident a few months ago in China (apparently she tried to get him out thru back channels). He believes it was murder, and vows to find her killers once it's over. Fayed and Gredenko launch 1 drone before leaving; CTU was tracking it then it disappeared. Apparently thru someone's workstation, the "controller" was picking up satellite coordinates and slipping thru the gaps. Chloe tracks it back to Nadia's workstation and she gets detained. Morris tries to trace the data back to the receiver, and sends a CTU team to the location. They take the controller alive and Bauer manages to steer the remote drone away from its target (San Francisco) and crashes it near a dock or pier (the canister leaked, likely giving a fatal dose to the first responders). Daniels orders a nuclear strike in an "uninhabited location" in the country Fayed's affiliated with, over the protests of Hayes and Lennox.

president alone can't just launch nukes.

that is true, but Daniels is now the acting President. And I don't think he'll have much trouble getting someone else to sign off on it. He was asking someone (Sec Def?) how long it would take to get the submarine in position....

Where is Jack's Dad and the whole connection with the family business with all of this... there has to be more...

Earlier in the season Jack's father Philip claimed that Gredenko found out about his involvement in Palmer's assassination and by extension activities on behalf of then-President Logan. So both Jack's father AND brother (Graem) were indirectly tied to events of season 5. Philip then stated that Gredenko blackmailed him into helping him smuggle the nuclear material into the US. Philip is still at large as of several episodes ago (fooling Jack into thinking he was going to shoot him and escaped).

president alone can't just launch nukes.

Are we sure this is true? Would this be an actual law or some executive order that a previous president has put in place? As command and chief he should be able to launch nukes by himself, otherwise it disrupts chain of command.

In any case, I love this vice-president. The over the top hard ass president act is awesome.

Actually I wouldn't mind that. Jack vs China. Seems like a fair fight. Seriously, anything that breaks the repetition of another day in LA with the same stuff happening with the same people would be great.

Nuclear weapons require two people to launch/fire/use, to prevent anyone from going crazy and starting some war.

I think that this is waived in the event of a major nuclear attack (old style Soviet Union launching a lot of missiles), and the president (or senior surviving gov't official) can launch without a 2nd person.

I think it's a safe assumption Jack will be in China next season tracking down Audrey's killers. My guess is he finds out while torturing someone that she's alive in some Chinese prison, to which Jack must destroy with lightning from his eyes and firebolts from his ass.

Back on topic to the episode, what's really bothering me with the drones is wtf are they needed for? They have nuclear bombs in suitcases... Wouldn't it be a hell of a lot easier to just drive into downtown San Francisco and detonate? I can see if they were trying to strike Russia and make it look like the US launched... but San Francisco? Is gas mileage really that bad in California that using a remotely piloted drone makes more sense than a Volvo?

It's 24 and not remotely grounded in reality.

Driving to san fran would take hours. Drone took less than an hour. There are other targets. You do the math.

As acting president he can launch that. After an attack on American soil (The nuke). The president is allowed to do stuff like that with out congressional approval for a certian time period. I don't know the time period but after an attack there is a limited time that he can control the military without any approval.

how else would you hit 3 targets in almost identical times within 24 hours of the first bomb going off? that was the original plan.

PLUS...detonating a nuke 500 feet in the air would cause more damage because the ground wouldn't absorb half the blast as it would if you detonated it 3 feet of the ground in a car.

Low altitude detonation = more blast damage, ground-level blast = more fallout. Tradeoff.

This VP = Cheney on steroids.

Audrey probably not really dead - staged accident, being held in China, where Jack can go rescue her.

Audrey Raines' new show The Nine is dead after like 8 episodes... I wonder if she didn't sign on 24 this season because of that show in the first place... maybe now she'll come back... and so she isn't really dead.
