Yeah, the story is starting to get weird. Why do shows always do this? Lost, Prison Break etc. They all try and make everything a conspiracy within a conspiracy and ruin it in the process. Now we have 2000 year old cylons, some reborn Kara Thrace, an Earth that was actually Cylons, and the boring character of Ellen appears to be the fifth hidden Cylon. All of that thrown at us in one episode. Like I said, it was rushed.

Am I the only one who thinks this show sucks? Everyone here seems to think it is brilliant! But all I see is poor writing and amateurish mellowdrama to "shock" viewers into becoming interested again.

1) Let's have another scene where Adama has a drunken emotional break-down and smashes things around or points a gun to his head to give emotional gravitas to the show.
2) Let's kill off another character by having Dee just shoot herself in the head for no reason. That'll get everyone talking!
3) Let's introduce confusing twists and hope the audience think we know where we're going with the show.

I think the show sucks because the story never makes sense... Cylons are machines made by man that revolted. They come back decades later looking like humans and can have children with humans? Baltar is hallucinating a Six, and a Six is hallucinating Baltar? And now, we find out this 13th tribe that left the colonies two thousand years ago, were actually cylons? Except cylons were made recently, and human cylons even more recent.

This is like Lost, where the show constantly brings up new questions, except unlike Lost, which makes a weak attempt to answer questions every episode, BSG doesn't even bother. The story just gets more convoluted and they pass it off as part of some grand scheme, when really it's just Bad.

All this has happened before, and it will happen again. It's cyclical. There have been many iterations of cylon.

is it out of the question that Tigh is just crazy? wasn't he also confusing the hot cylon chick for Ellen?

Well, that whole little interview section there just pretty much confirmed they have been making up crap as they go along instead of having a big plot arc from the beginning...

This is all extremely confusing. What if Starbuck found the resurrection thing on Earth accidentally and that is how she came back, even though she is human?

I don't necessarily think he was 'confusing' her and 6, but 6 just reminded him of Ellen a good amount (and that alone is very believable), and he also would just be very Tigh-like in doing so. I look past that as being very much normal for him, mostly just as a means to cope with such a fucked up past/life and trying to make it feel better in the moment.

I dunno. As much as I always disliked Ellen as a character, she has a LOT of room to expand. She could very easily become a very dynamic character if the writers go about it correctly.

She is a character that is very easy to despise, but was never expanded enough to any degree that would pin the writers into a corner. To this point she's always been written to be a character that really was meant to be hated, but she was never given a backstory likely for that reason. So if they expand on her history that could change quickly.

The idea of her being the fifth will give her character a lot of room for change in the remaining episodes, as well as Tigh. They both have been painted so heavily on one light with little evidence for the contrary, but honestly both have a lot of room for change if given the light. I'm actually excited to see the added depth to Ellen's character. She was never a character I liked at all, but I expect that to change if those two are given more depth in the Cylon history.

It's much like Lost. There were quite a few characters I basically hated, but once given more history my attitude changed.

truthfully, I've always thought that Ellen was a cylon... the way she was introduced was just super shifty and then with the whole cylon detector thing that never worked...

Yeah, I was beginning to fear this as well. I hold on to hope that the writers can pull of some amazing conclusion to the story arc that makes it seemed planned from the start (think like the end to DS9, which IMO has the best plot from s1-s7 ever).

When the "final five" were talked about, I talked with my one friend at the time who was into BSG as well about who they were. I threw out Ellen, and thought there was a good chance it was her (You look at the human-cylon relationships like boomer/chief) and it kinda makes sense.

The Cylon detector never worked because everybody's a Cylon.

Quite true because I don't remember it showing anyone to not be a Cylon.

Note that I went back and watched the episode again and they determined the earth population was cylon using the "our cylon (meaning the cylons with the fleet) bone test".
Some people seem to think they used Baltars old test.

What is the deal with the bones? Aren't Cylons machines? I don't understand what Cylon bones are.

I don't know either. Maybe a reference to how their backbones glow red when they're having sex.

There?s a certain logic to it. I sort of figured out early on that I liked the pairing of her and Tigh. [I liked] that there was something deeper to their marriage and deeper to their relationship, that it was literally a relationship that had transcended time and space, that it was very ancient that had gone on for a very long time. It was something that was [mentioned] in the pilot for ?Galactica.?

When did you make that selection?

It was somewhere in the course of the third season [that the possibility was first raised.] We killed Ellen early that season and we didn?t have an inkling of that at that point. But at the point that we killed Ellen, around the same time frame, I was starting to come up with the idea that there were five Cylons that had yet to be revealed.

At the beginning of the third season, Baltar had gone to live on the Cylon base ship for a string of episodes. And it was really that plot move that threw into relief -- well, once Baltar?s over in the Cylon world, why wouldn?t he see all 12 of them? How could we get around that and parcel that out? Then I had this idea, well, what if it?s not random? What if there?s a meaning to the fact that we haven?t seen the five of them? And that?s how the Final Five became part of the mythos.

Over the course of the third season, Ellen came and went in my thinking in terms of who the final five were. It probably wasn?t until we settled on the final four that I knew it was Ellen. When we got to the final four -- Tigh, Anders, Tory and Tyrol -- then it felt like, ?and Ellen has to be the fifth.? Because Tigh being revealed as a Cylon was such a profound shift in that character, such a big leap for the show, that it felt really natural that she was also a Cylon.

And he had killed her for collaborating with the Cylons! There were layers and depths to that I felt were really fascinating, about guilt and blame and memory and responsibility, and I just really liked the way that all tied together.

So we will come to know, in this next set of episodes, who knew that Ellen was a Cylon, and that will play out in what?s coming?

Yes.

So we?ll see her again. Does she figure prominently in the season?

I don?t want to give too much away, but it won?t be the last time that you see Ellen.

One place my mind instantly went, on a fan-trivia level, was to that opera house vision that D?Anna has. She says to one of the Final Five, something like, ?I?m sorry, I had no idea.? Did she say that to Ellen?

I think the intention of that -- we had a conversation about that in the writers room -- [once it had been decided that Ellen was a Cylon] the intention was that [the one D?Anna spoke to] was Ellen. When we wrote the line, we didn?t have a clear intention, but later, when we?d decided [on all the Cylons], I think the feeling was, that was Ellen.

What a dumb, pointless selection. At least make it a character of consequence.

Man that article makes it seem like he's just pulling the plot out of his ass as it goes along.

The cylons are organic machines (sound familiar?).

They obviosly are, but this is nothing new in TV. ET was not the originally written 5th Cylon; it WAS absolutely Dee Duwalla, and that has changed in the last 6 months.
