That's what I was thinking. You just need to get close enough to catch their drive flares. I wonder why they didn't just use the stargate to transfer to the new planet. It would take a while to filter a few million people over but should be faster than the ships.

Can't you move stargates? If they know their planet is unstable, and have mastered interstellar travel, you could simply move it off planet, or at the very least, a safer location onplanet.

Both? Can that be an answer? Honestly, it would be hard to continue the stargate series in the Milky Way Galaxy. Earth has the tech of both the ancients and the asgard at their disposal, no enemies left that pose a threat, and the ability to warp anywhere in the milky way within hours for a rescue mission/attack.
