I was *seriously* thinking of getting in on this. I've moved to a new house and all but gave my 13 year old the 27" Trinitron believing that I will finally be getting a HDTV soon. When I checked though it was SOLD OUT. I guess I have to hop on the next hot deal instead.

If you missed this deal for the Infocus HD2+ DLP TV, you can still get the Infocus HD2+ DLP *projector* for $2500:

It's lighter and takes up less space, and you can have a screen that's ~10 feet wide instead of ~5 feet wide (for quadruple the display space)! Of course, you really need to have a pretty dark room.

Like the Infocus TV, this projector lists HDMI as a feature (but not HDCP). If you want a projector with HDCP, then check out the similar-spec'ed Benq 7700 for a few dollars more.

Also, for those arguing the merits of 720p vs. 1080i, my semi-informed understanding is that the picture quality is very comparable. But I give the edge to 720p if you plan to play Xbox 360 or PS3, which will both render games in 720p. (PS3 can also allegedly output 1080p signals, but 1080p display devices are very rare and ridiculously expensive.) I also assume that Sony's Blu-Ray movies will output in 720p.

Actually both PS3 and XBox360 can do 1080i. This isn't a big issue for most people since usually HDTVs can use both resolutions.

However, the xbox 360 can do 1080p too, they just aren't pushing it because MS is realistic and knows that virtually no games will display in 1080p.
