Why did you even list this? This isn't worthy of even "thinking" about being a Hot Deal. What is next on Woot, selling "refurbished" 5 1/4" Floppy Drives?

It's about $100 to $200 over priced for the speed. Perhaps some Wooters will fall for this but compared to the Dell deals and the Compaq deals for AMD64 at the office * it is poor.

Well, on IBM's defense....

We have a 15% repair rate with our T20/21/22/23 laptops in field...and that's after 3-4 years...

Whereas, our Dell lineup, including some inspiron and 600m's are already dropping after less than 2 years, many with hinge and random problems that the dell techs can't determine....this results in multiple returns for repair. The resulting figure is a stagering %40 after less than 2 years.

Repair rate is based on number of units repaired divided by the # of units originaly deployed. It is possible to achive a score higher than %100, but its not very common.

But for $399, I'd still recommend a NEW dell laptop for the average user.....

Not a great deal but not terrible either depending on your usage for them. I can vouch for the Thinkpad T series' quality as I have a T23 1GHz/512MB/20GB/14"XGA/LAN/56K that I bought a month ago for $360 which has paid for itself in less than a week. It's not super fast but it's solid as hell and totally dependable. Keys are very comfy too. Can't say for the same for the Dell laptops I've had in the past...

Cosidering that's about what they go for on ebay, it's not THAT bad of an deal. There's a reason used Thinkpad T-Series laptops cost almost as much as a new Dell - the build quality is FAR superior. I dropped my T20 about 18 inches onto a hardwood floor while it was running and it's still chugging along.

If I wanted a T22 right now, I'd go with this WOOT deal over ebay, just because I'd feel better trusting them over some random eBayer.

"With time, obsolete old junk becomes collectible old junk. If every shopkeeper had kept his tin Coca-Cola signs, if every prairie family had passed down its butter churn like an heirloom, if every ?80s nerd had preserved his silver Atari jacket ? well, there?d be no need for Antiques Roadshow. Bequeath your great-grandchildren a full collection of junk-mail AOL CDs in the original tins, and they?ll be able to send your great-great-grandchildren to college."

Sometimes you don't need state-of-the-art just to write a paper or surf the web. This is a great computer for school. I know two people going to college with T22's and they love them.

Given the high rate of theft of notebooks at colleges, it would be comforting to know that you can't loose too much.

For everyday use, you simply can't beat a Thinkpad.

flame on!

no need to, you've already made yourself look like a fool

Thinkpads are awesome notebooks and are second to none, imo. Sony laptops are the epitome of overpriced and overhyped. i've owned this laptop and for $400 it's a little overpriced, however i wouldn't hesitate recommending it to a student who doesn't need a gaming laptop. if it's refurbed from IBM themselves, i'm sure it will come looking brand spankin' new. that's been my experience with IBM refurbed Thinkpads.

I'm aware IBM thinkpads are very good, however, they are still expensive compared to other products with similar specs. Many people simply have this notion that simply because a brand is popular or has a good image, it is worth the extra money. This also applies to Sony and Bose especially.

Thinkpads are built rock solid and are almost always atop lists that rate current notebooks.

comparing Thinkpads to Sony and Bose is ludicrous. show me audiophile publications that rate Bose highly. you're analogy is way off. you need only to hold the latest Dell notebook with the latest Thinkpad to see the difference.

Again, I am NOT disputing the fact that Thinkpads are good - just that they are expensive and hence do offer very good value/price (esp for college students). The Sony/Bose comparison was made towards the "simply because a brand is popular or has a good image, it is worth the extra money" comment - not directly with Thinkpads. Anyway, no point in continuing...don't think either of us is going to budge on this issue.

i agree that i'm not going to convince you to like Thinkpad's, while you won't convince me that they are the best laptops out there.

just out of curiosity, have you owned a thinkpad before?
